Prepping and the Mind

When people talk about “The End Of The World As We Know It” (TEOTWAWKI), it is almost always in ways of how we might prepare for the end, what equipment to have, how much food to store, and what skills we must learn. These are all valid points. Most people can agree on common standards in these areas, but what if the act of preparing for the end can cause danger to yourself and your family?

I’m not mocking prepping; I’m a prepper myself. I’m simply stating that a prepper must be in the correct mindset to make choices they may not have expected to make. Say a disaster happens; you’ve prepared for this years ago, and you know what to do. You go home, get your bug out bag, and get to your bug out location, which you have stocked with ammo, food, and everything you need to survive for at least a year. What if that location becomes compromised? Maybe, word got around about a guy with a lot of gear and food, and people slowly started to flock to your location. Some went to ask for food, and some that want to take it. What do you do?

I’ve asked a few people this question. Some were preppers, some were regular people, and some were people in my life who I considered very smart and successful at life in general. I was expecting some of the answers I got, and I was surprised by others. Most of the preppers I talked to had a “stand my ground” mentality. Nobody was going to take “his” or “her” stuff without a fight. The regular folks said to start hiding supplies. (I wasn’t really sure if this would be a feasible plan.) The answer that shocked me the most and opened my eyes to this problem is what I got from the people in my life that I thought of as successful. (These people are not preppers, but they have good jobs and have climbed the ladder fast.) They said they would grab a bag of bare essentials and leave.

I was very against this idea at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I believed that the common prepper mentality was very crippling. It is impossible to predict the future. You can have a lot of guesses about what might happen, but that is it. What if something comes and you are away from all that stuff you stockpiled, or you get injured right off the bat, or somebody steals everything? Prepping for a disaster is good insurance. However, if somebody doesn’t have the mental fortitude to abandon all of it if they need to, then all the prepping in the world cannot save you.

That being said, how do you prepare for that? Sometimes it’s just the type of person you are. There are survival stories all over the place of people living through almost impossible odds, without any prepping for it. To name a few of these people, there is Harrison Okene, who was trapped underwater for three days when his tugboat capsized; Norman Ollestad Jr., whose plane crashed in the mountains at age 11, and he climbed down, dragging an injured woman; Eric LeMarque, who got lost while skiing and used iPod radio signal as compass for seven days; Ricky Megee, who was lost in the Australian outback for 71 days; and many more. These people were very different in nationality, situation location, and the supplies each one had available to them. I found this very interesting while I was researching this. The recurring theme, in most of the survival stories I researched, was the complete lack of supplies. If any of these people did have supplies, they had no qualms about using them, but they had nothing compared to what is deemed necessary by the average prepper today.

There was some luck involved in these incidents, but was that all? How did these people survive with few or no supplies and little or no training? For every story of survival miracles, there are hundreds of stories about those who died or were never heard from again. What is that special “stuff” that they have that other people don’t?

We need to rule out a few things first. Was it their experience? I don’t think so. Many of these survival stories depict city slickers and woodsman that both survive, so that can’t be it. Is it their dogged willingness to survive no matter what? A lot of people think that this is true, but I don’t. I think that if determination and a little luck were all it took to survive in those situations, then we would have a lot more success stories. So what is it then? I didn’t figure it out for a few months.

It happened when I was talking to my father about getting ahead at work. One simple thing he said to me struck me like lightning. He said, “Dave, you just need to be the guy that gets things done.” I know that doesn’t sound like one of the Ten Commandments, but when you really think about it isn’t that who always seems to come out on top? Isn’t that who gets the big account at work? Who gets the girl? Who are the people celebrated by society for heroic acts?

We all know one or two people like this. They are the guy or gal who are always calm in a crisis and react to situations with speed and decisiveness. They are the guys to take down the robber in the bank. They’re the person who jumps down to pull a civilian away from subway tracks on which they fell. Once I realized this, I started to see it everywhere. You can also. I want you can watch this:

You can see a victim fall on the subway rail and is then rescued by a fellow commuter.

Now watch everyone else on the platform. It’s amazing when you really look. Most people do next to nothing despite being so close to the victim. This is not because they are bad people or just don’t care. It’s just their natural reaction. The person who saved the victim was one of the furthest away, and the reaction was instant without time for thought. That was not the only example. You can search for “real life heroes” on YouTube and find many more. These types of people are the ones who have the natural talent for getting things done. I believe these are the people who have the best chance of surviving TEOTWAWKI. That’s great for them. What is everybody else supposed to do? That is the really difficult question to answer. Luckily this problem has been around for a while, and other people have thought up solutions.

The army needed a way to keep soldiers from freezing up during battle. (I’m former military, and any of the former military guys reading this knows how epically messed up the situation can get, if someone in your chain of command freezes up. The way they do that is to train and train, and after that, they train some more. The theory behind the practice is to convert every action to muscle memory, so that you don’t even need to think; you just react. This is a pretty effective method. The one downside is that it’s very time-consuming, and you need a large amount of discipline, if you want to do this on your own.

Another way to deal with this problem is to just bypass it. By that, I mean that you team up with someone in your life that can just get things done. That way when the SHTF, you just stick to him like glue. I am personally not a fan of this practice. While it is better than nothing, it is just hard for me to completely trust someone like that, unless I know him or her really well. You also may guess wrong, and you can’t take chances with something this important.

So, if you’re one of the lucky few who was born with the natural ability to complete any task you were given, then I salute you and wish you luck. If not, then don’t lose hope. Start practicing those drills until they are second nature. Remember, the right survival mindset is a far more precious commodity then a fully-loaded AR-15.

In conclusion, I now only believe that the people truly prepared for disasters are the ones that are ready and confident to do so with NO supplies. So, you need to ask yourself, can I survive with just my bare hands and the right mindset? The answer for myself is, “No.” If it’s “no” for you as well, then you really need to work on this. Supplies and weapons are great to have, but you can’t bet your life on the guarantee that you will be able to use them. I hope that everyone learned something from this article and that it won’t be too controversial. Good luck and stay safe out there guys.

Cellulitis: An Epidemic in a Collapse

Medical Preparedness and Collapse Medicine

Hey Prepper Nation,

In a collapse situation, we will be required to perform many outdoors activities we are not used to. We’ll be chopping wood, making fires, and doing various chores that have the potential for injury.
Simple injuries like cuts and minor burns will be more common, and so will complications when those wounds fail to heal correctly.  One of the most common complications will be infection.

How Can I Prevent Infection?

Despite everything you have done to care for a wound, there is a chance that an infection will occur.  Infection in the soft tissues below the level of the skin (epidermis) is referred to as “cellulitis”.  Below the epidermis, the main layers of soft tissue are the dermis (you’ve seen this area when you scraped your knee as a kid), the subcutaneous fat, and the muscle layers. Cellulitis is significant to Preppers because it will be very commonly seen in a collapse. Although preventable, the sheer number of cuts, scrapes and burns will make it one of the most prevalent medical problems. This infection can easily reach the bloodstream, and, without antibiotics, can cause a life-threatening condition known as sepsis.  Once sepsis has set in, inflammation of the spinal cord (meningitis) or bony structures (osteomyelitis) can further complicate the situation.

The bacteria that can cause cellulitis are on your skin right now.  Normal inhabitants of the surface of your skin include Staphylococcus (staph) and Streptococcus (strep).  They do no harm until the skin is broken.  Then, they can invade deeper layers where they are not supposed to be normally.  Inflammation occurs as a result.  The injured area becomes red, warm and tender to the touch.

Conditions that will be likely to cause cellulitis:

Cracks or peeling skin between the toes

         History of varicose veins/poor circulation

Injuries that cause a break in the skin

Insect bites and stings, animal bites, or human bites

Ulcers from chronic illness, such as diabetes

Use of steroids or other medications that affect the immune system

         Wounds from previous surgery

         Intravenous drug use

The symptoms and signs of cellulitis are:

Discomfort/pain in the area of infection

         Fever and Chills

         Exhaustion (Fatigue)

         General ill feeling (Malaise)

         Muscle aches (myalgia)

Heat in the area of the infection

Drainage of pus/cloudy fluid from the area of the infection

         Redness, usually spreading towards torso

Swelling in the area of infection (causing a sensation of tightness)

Foul odor coming from the area of infection

Other, less common, symptoms that can occur with this disease:

Hair loss at the site of infection

Joint stiffness caused by swelling of the tissue over the joint

         Nausea and vomiting

The treatment of cellulitis usually involves the use of antibiotics; these can be topical, oral or intravenous.  Most cellulitis will retreat and disappear after a 10 – 14 day course of therapy with medications in the penicillin, erythromycin, or cephalosporin (Keflex) families.  Many of these are available in veterinary form without a prescription (see our various articles on antibiotics).  Acetominophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil) are useful to decrease discomfort.  Warm water soaks have been used for many years along with elevation of infected extremities for symptomatic relief.  Over several days, you should see an improvement.  It would be wise to complete the full 10-14 days of antibiotics to prevent any recurrences.

In a collapse situation, it’s important to be especially careful to wear eye and hand protection. Any injury has the potential to be life-threatening in a situation when modern medical care is not available.

36 Paracord Projects

Parachute cord, which is now universally known as paracord, is a lightweight nylon all-purpose utility cord that is used by military personnel and civilians alike.

Paracord is an ideal material for lots of different types of projects due to its durability and flexibility. The uses of paracord as a tool in a survival setting are countless.

You are likely familiar with the ever popular “survival bracelets” made from paracord, which are meant to be unraveled when needed to lash poles together, to fix broken laces and straps and to secure cargo.

Did you know there are also 100′s of other great paracord projects you can also make? Paracord makes an excellent material for stylish bracelets, lanyards, pouches, watches, belts, dog collars, whips and more.

We picked 36 of our favorites for you to try out. Our selections offer everything from traps to whips to weapons, and even a keychain with a secret hidden compartment that makes a super tiny survival kit.

First thing’s first:

Paracord 101

You have to make sure you know what you’re working with and have the right supplies. If you really want to get into paraweaving, you should check out Paracord 101 before you start on your projects. With that, you should be all set to delve into these 36 paracord projects for preppers.

Here are 36 Paracord Projects for Preppers:

1. Paracord Belt

Keep your paracord close to you with this versatile, functional DIY. Everyone can use a belt and everyone should keep paracord on them! This tutorial shows you how to make a DIY paracord rescue belt, my favorite of all the paracord belts I tried.  Paracord bracelets can come in handy but only have 8-12 feet of rope, while a paracord belt can have up to 50 feet or more of rope.

In extreme situations, 50 feet of rope would be a lot more use for you than 8-12 feet. However, this paracord belt gives you at least 50 feet of rope that is quickly accessible, and depending on your waist size, up to 100 ft. This belt is a quick deploy survival rescue belt that uses Slatt’s rescue weave. You can unravel, or deploy, the paracord in a matter of seconds.

Make your own belt with these instructions.

2. Paracord Keychain with Secret Compartment

There are a lot of different ways to make these guys, but the one we like the best is this survival kit keychain from DIY Ready. You can store money, matches, any small essential survival items you can think of in this cool keychain with a secret compartment.

Make your own using these instructions.

3. Paracord Bullwhip

These instructions will help you make a bullwhip entirely out of paracord. It should not be that hard for those of you who know their way through ropes, knots and braiding. I wouldn’t recommend this as a beginner project though.

It involves careful and regular braiding of up to 12 strands a bit over 12 feet long, which can be a bit messy or frustrating if you’re not familiar with manipulating such lengths of cord. You will also need to know ( or be willing to learn) some ‘advanced’ knots to make it look nice.

For more information, click here.

4. Paracord Rifle Sling

Another sling to keep your weapons close by without taking up your hands. This is perfect for any hunter or outdoorsman.

Make your own with these instructions.

5. Paracord Giant Monkey Fist

Why make a regular monkey fist when you can make a giant one! This DIY using a pool ball core will give you the ultimate monkey fist to use for your self defense. A paracord monkey fist is beneficial to carry on you for survival and self defense purposes. It’s super easy to conceal and carries enough power to slow down any attacker.

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to make a paracord monkey fist using a pool ball! This giant monkey fist weighs in at a hefty 6 ounces! For the full instructions, click here.

6. Paracord Bundle Compression Strap and Handle

This is a very handy tool. It’s simple, but it will keep your sleeping bag, tarps, and other large items bundled up tight and easy to carry.

It can get frustrating carrying soft items like blankets or clothes to a camp ground. I designed this super easy to make strap to carry blankets; however, it can also be used to carry other items like bundled wood which makes it incredibly useful!! The Design is super simple and does not require many tools or materials. I used two colors to make this, but you could of course use one if you prefer. I am using this for camping so I made sure to choose darker color paracord to ensure that it will not show how dirty it will get after extended use. For the full instructions, click here.

7. Paracord Snow Shoes

You never know what kind of conditions you’ll have to be prepared for. Check out these instructions to learn how to make your very own paracord snow shoes.

This is a traditional style snow shoe with paracord for the webbing. The intention was to give a modern twist to classic style that almost everyone is familiar with. This tutorial includes a step by step for the frame and also shows you the basic weaving for the net. For the full DIY, click here.

8. Quick Deploy Paracord Bracelet

There are so many ways to make paracord survival bracelets. Here’s our favorite version: The Blaze Bar. The blaze bar paracord survival bracelet unravels in seconds:

9. Paracord Survival Tin Pouch

Keep your Altoid Tin Survival Kit in this pouch to keep it protected and yourself prepared! Throughout this Instructable, I will be showing you guys how to make a pouchout of paracord. This particular pouch is made to fit an Altoids tin.

For many outdoorsman or survivalists, Altoid tins are the perfect containers for a small, pocket survival tin. I like using the pouch for my survival tin so I can pack more stuff into the tin and not worry about it popping open. Full instructions

10. Paracord Watchband

Add some survival to your daily wardrobe by  creating watchbands for a pre-existing watch face. Choose different colors to make different looks! This is a super project if you want to  make something unique and also functional.   You can make either a solid color watchband or one with two colors. You can also follow the same steps in this tutorial to make a bracelet with a side release buckle.

Check out the DIY instructions here.

11. Paracord Hanging Chair

With the addition of some palette boards, you can create a hanging chair out of paracord. Very comfortable, very easy to make chair from a pallet and some paracord.

I have never seen a chair like this before. It is so easy to make and it is comfortable because it conforms to your body.

15. Paracord Dog Toys

This super strong material is perfect for chewing on by man’s best friend. These easy to make colorful rope toys are great for any size dog. Just scale up or down the diameter of the rope to fit your dog, 1/4″ for small dogs or 3/8″ for large dogs.

Directions given are for a basic toss/tug toy pictured below. Pictured are several variations based on the basic knot that can be created with a little practice and creativity. For the full instructions, check out the DIY.

16. Paracord Laptop Harnass

Stow your technology in this cool paracord case.

I noticed there wasn’t really a design for a paracord laptop harness/carrier made out of just paracord that didn’t involve simply weaving it, so I decided to remedy this with the paracord contest as a motivator.

When starting this project, I had several criteria I wanted to hit, and after three other prototypes, this one succeeds. 1) 100% paracord 2) Symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing 3) Successfully holds the darn laptop where it’s supposed to be! 4) Is easy to remove the laptop from and easy to put it back in

To make your own, check out these instructions.

17. Paracord Chair

Another chair with a different layout. This version doesn’t have to be suspended and features a seat of paracord rather than wood. This project is really simple, as it involves two intersecting wooden rectangles that have a seat and back made from woven paracord.

I’m going to assume that anyone attempting this project has basic woodworking skills and is familiar with power tools, so this won’t be a woodshop class. I will be presenting a flexible idea that can be modified rather than absolute plans… please feel free to experiment and play… but don’t get locked into a rigid perspective that there’s only one way to do it. :o) Want to build your own? Click here.

18. Paracord Leatherman Pouch

Keep your Leatherman safe and close using paracord to fashion a custom pouch. This instructable will show you how to weave a custom made pouch using paracord. The method used can be easily modified to fit a range of items from multi-tools and torches to mobile phones. It is very simple to make and doesnt use any fancy or difficult knots.

This patricular pouch used a total of 25 feet of 550 paracord however if you are making a pouch for something larger then obvooisly you would need a little more. When making anything its always best to start with the best materials you can find which is why i always recommend using genuine military spec 550 paracord. The better the cord the longer your pouch will last. Find the full DIY here.

19. Paracord Dog Collar

This durable collar will stand up to almost anything and add some personality to your best friend! Right now, our favorite one is this DIY paracord dog collar. It’s the ultimate dog collar made with about 40ft of 550 paracord. This paracord dog collar is your best bet if you are looking for a stylish collar that is also super strong and durable.

If you’ve been following our paracord projects, then you know the Cobra weave is one of the more popular weaves. For this paracord dog collar, we are going to take it one step further and do a King Cobra weave! This weave is super strong and even adds a thickness and padding to the original cobra weave, making the collar more comfortable for pooches of all sizes. Find the full DIY here.

20. Paracord Double Monkey Fist Bookmark

This multi-functioning project can help you stay safe and up on your reading. This snazzy bookmark will have all your friends saying ‘cool’!  I like playing with knots and stuff, so when I saw a picture of this somewhere on the internet, I decided it would be a cool project to do.

It was a bit of a challenge, but it isn’t too difficult, and has a definite cool factor. Find the instructions here.

21. Paracord Bottle Net

Keep your water bottle strapped to you with this easy DIY. Great for hiking, biking, or any outdoor activity! I’ll be showing you how I made a fitted net to carry a nalgene bottle or other jar/bottle/item.

Using the lid loop on the canteen works, but I have had several break after a while, and then I am doomed to loose the lid. The net gives you multiple attachment options and offers some protection against rubbing. Make your own with these instructions.

22. Paracord iPhone Case

These instructions will help you make a case to protect your precious technology. Create this simple case with a few knots to keep the paracord wrapped tight and your phone secure and in place.

25. Paracord Lanyard

Lanyards are a great functional way of keeping your keys, now made even better with paracord! Make a Paracord Lanyard to hold your ID badge. 26. Paracord Eyeglass Lanyard

This DIY is perfect for anyone who enjoys being on the water. Whether fishing or floating, use paracord to keep your glasses or shades in place. This Instructable describes a method of making a paracord lanyard to help keep your glasses on, or near, your head.  Based on your adjustment of the cord, the glasses can either dangle on your chest, or be held snugly to the face.

This method uses only paracord; some alternative approaches that incorporate additional materials are shown at the end. Full instructions.

This simple rig can be customized to different sized jugs, a very convenient tool to have around when carrying water.

30. Paracord Self Defense Key Fob

On top of being a keychain, this project features a monkey fist addition to keep yourself defense ready.

Instructions here.

31. Paracord Drawstring Bag

This DIY will help you create a versatile and durable bag. Adjust the DIY for different sizes!

Since I was going for a simple design, I used overhand knots for 99% of this design; since it’s so simple, I’m sure others have ended up doing this at some point or another. Note: This can be used as a general idea on making more drawstring pouches/sacks using different knots. Check out the full DIY.

32. Paracord Multi-Tool Pouch

Every good prepper knows how important a multi-tool can be. So why not make it it’s own paracord pouch.

Make your own with these instructions.

33. Paracord Backpack Strap Wrap

Up the durability of normal pack straps by this addition of a paracord wrap. The Paracord Strap Wrap is a simple way of tidying up loose ends on your gear using various lengths of paracord. Using paracord instead of things like cable ties has its obvious advantages to any paracord fanatic.

Depending on the amount of the strap you want to cover and the thickness you want to make it you can use anywhere between 2 or 3 meters up to 15. Full instructions.

34. Paracord Bandoiler

Keep your ammo neat and orderly with this easy DIY.

Under certain circumstances I like to bring a rifle and ammo with me when I go into the wilderness. And of course it’s always a good idea to bring a length of paracord too. Both items fall into the “could come in handy” category of gear. In the endless persuit to lighten my pack and reduce bulk I’ve combined the two. Rather than just carrying around paracord on the off chance I might need it here’s a way to give it a full time job; holding your ammunition. It allows you to leave the ammo boxes at home and is a step up from just having loose rounds scattered about your pack.

Full instructions.

35. Paracord Wallet

Aside from looking pretty cool, this super durable wallet will last a lot longer than traditional wallets. This wallet is made from approximately 28′ of gutted paracord.

Full insructions.

36. Paracord Rock Sling

This DIY will give you a back up weapon that doesn’t need bullets or arrows to be useful. You’ll never run out of ammo with this paracord slingshot.

The sling is one of the easiest ranged weapons you can make. Because of that, it is popular with survivalists and anyone who likes to improvise. It is a weapon made out of a piece of string or a cord. It has been used since ancient times for hunting and more prominently, in warfare. The sling was popularized as a cheap, easy to make weapon with range greater than that of a bow. Due to it low cost it is considered a weapon of the poor. Instructions here.

EPA Fines for Wyoming Family even with proper permit

It is becoming increasingly evident that property owners do not actually own the parcels of land they are paying for. Decades ago, if an individual ‘owned’ a piece of property they could basically do whatever they wanted to with it, or on it, such as growing crops, building a stocked pond, etc. Nowadays there are strict rules and regulations one has to contend with. It has been reported that the EPA is considering fines in the amount of $75,000 a day, against a Wyoming family, for building a stock pond on their property.

We cover topics, like building a stocked pond, in our monthly publication, always with the forewarning that property owners should consult local authorities to discover the rules and regulations involved with their region. It seems that even that process can result in problems with agencies like the EPA. The EPA claims the Wyoming family has violated the Clean Water Act, while the family claims they are well within the parameters of the law.

FOX:

“All Andy Johnson wanted to do was build a stock pond on his sprawling eight-acre Wyoming farm. He and his wife Katie spent hours constructing it, filling it with crystal-clear water, and bringing in brook and brown trout, ducks and geese. It was a place where his horses could drink and graze, and a private playground for his three children.

But instead of enjoying the fruits of his labor, the Wyoming welder says he was harangued by the federal government, stuck in what he calls a petty power play by the Environmental Protection Agency. He claims the agency is now threatening him with civil and criminal penalties – including the threat of a $75,000-a-day fine.

“I have not paid them a dime nor will I,” a defiant Johnson told FoxNews.com. “I will go bankrupt if I have to fighting it. My wife and I built [the pond] together. We put our blood, sweat and tears into it. It was our dream.”

The government says he violated the Clean Water Act by building a dam on a creek without a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers. Further, the EPA claims that material from his pond is being discharged into other waterways. Johnson says he built a stock pond — a man-made pond meant to attract wildlife — which is exempt from Clean Water Act regulations.

The property owner says he followed the state rules for a stock pond when he built it in 2012 and has an April 4-dated letter from the Wyoming State Engineer’s Office to prove it.

“Said permit is in good standing and is entitled to be exercised exactly as permitted,” the state agency letter to Johnson said.

But the EPA isn’t backing down and argues they have final say over the issue. They also say Johnson needs to restore the land or face the fines.

Johnson plans to fight. “This goes a lot further than a pond,” he said. “It’s about a person’s rights. I have three little kids. I am not going to roll over and let [the government] tell me what I can do on my land. I followed the rules.”

The EPA order on Jan. 30 gave Johnson 30 days to hire a consultant and have him or her assess the impact of the supposed unauthorized discharges. The report was also supposed to include a restoration proposal to be approved by the EPA as well as contain a schedule requiring all work be completed within 60 days of the plan’s approval.

If Johnson doesn’t comply — and he hasn’t so far — he’s subject to $37,500 per day in civil penalties as well as another $37,500 per day in fines for statutory violations.

The authority of the EPA has recently been called into question over proposed rule changes that would redefine what bodies of water the government agency will oversee under the Clean Water Act.

The proposed changes would give the agency a say in ponds, lakes, wetlands and any stream — natural or manmade — that would have an effect on downstream navigable waters on both public land and private property. “If the compliance order stands as an example of how EPA intends to operate after completing its current ‘waters of the United States’ rulemaking, it should give pause to each and every landowner throughout the country,” the letter states.”

Russia Blocks Websites Of Putin’s Critics, Including Chess Star Garry Kasparov

Russia is blocking websites critical of President Vladimir Putin. The Prosecutor General’s office ordered Russian Internet service providers to cut off access to a handful of websites, including the blog of famed chess champion, Garry Kasparov. “These sites contain incitement to illegal activity and participation in public events held in violation of the established order,” read the announcement (via Google translate).

Kasparaov immediately took to Twitter to denounce the move:

Not only did Putin block access to opposition news sites in Russia, but Rus govt contacted our admin to turn off servers. They work fast.

Garry Kasparov (@Kasparov63) March 13, 2014

Blocking theses websites is just the latest in a turbulent month for the Russian government. Earlier this month, Russia blocked over a dozen Ukrainian activist websites, protesting their military intervention of Crimea. Last week, a Russia Today anchor quit on-air, saying she could no longer work for a network that “whitewashes” Putin’s image.

Putin has defended his free speech record, claiming that he is preserving order and upholding the law.

Gun Rights Battle in Connecticut

I don’t know if you’ve been following what’s been going down in Connecticut since Jan. 1, but what happens there could very well set a precedent for gun owners across the country. Call it ignorance, call it civil disobedience, or explain it away by saying, “they must not have known”, but however you put it, there could very well be some serious rumbling coming out of Southern New England.

Law-abiding gun owners waiting in line to register firearms.

In case you haven’t been following this situation (it’s been downplayed now with other soon-to-be-old-news news stories), I’ll give you a quick synopsis: (you can read this too, or do a Google search on “CT gun rights battle”)On January 1, 2014, the state of Connecticut passed a law that requires anyone owning a gun or guns with certain characteristics (the evil “assault weapon”) – as well as any high-capacity magazines (!), capable of holding more than 10 rounds. Citizens possessing these types of firearms were given a deadline to register these guns and the magazines – there were over 100 types of firearms in the category. Owners were allowed to be grandfathered to keep them, but the guns had to be registered, and the owners fingerprinted and submit all their personal information into a statewide registry. If they did not submit to registering their guns and magazines once the deadline passed, they would be criminals, guilty of a class D felony. A Class D felony in CT is the lowest felony charge, with 1-5 years jail time and up to $5,000 in fines….but the real kicker is that once you’re a felon, you may no longer posses ANY weapon, let alone a dreaded “black gun”. The guns may be seized by the law once you are a felon.

What happened? Well, as can be seen in the photo above, many citizens of the Constitution State (ironic, isn’t it?) fell in line, literally and figuratively, with the letter of the law, and submitted to registering their legally-purchased guns. But it’s what DIDN’T happen that’s causing the stir: an estimated 100,000-350,000 gun owners did NOT register their guns, and only 36,932 high-capacity magazines were registered. Huh. Hundreds of thousands of gun-owning citizens who did nothing wrong guilty of nothing whatsoever – are suddenly felons, with the stroke of a pen and the strike of a clock hand.

Lawmakers are stunned; they expected this to go smoothly. They are now faced with the issue of what to do: backpedal and repeal, no nothing and look like fools, or aggressively go after these suddenly-illegal guns and gun owners. People from all over the country are rallying in support of CT gun owners, and law enforcement officers (some of whom did not register their guns!)  are refusing to enforce the law, as they believe it blatantly flies in the face of the 2nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This article sums up the feelings of many of the state’s gun owners, and is worth a read.

How does this affect us, as preppers, people who are prepared? Well, if things go south for CT gun owners, states across the nation that don’t want their citizens possessing this type of weaponry could drop their own similar bills, stating that Connecticut is now the status quo. Say you wanted an MIA, AK-47, M1 carbine, Mini-14, AR-15 as a SHTF gun? Oops, too bad. Even though you bought it legally with money you worked hard for and it was 100% kosher when you bought it, a government lawmaker (who is protected by people with these same guns) with a hair across his/her ass thinks YOU shouldn’t have it, so you’re now potentially a felon, expect the SWAT team at your door with their AR-15s drawn, anytime now.

Folks, I’ve read articles that state that this is no big deal, but I’ve also read that  as soon as they start enforcing this law on a door-to-door basis, it will be the next revolution, the ultimate slap in the face to the law-abiding citizens and the constitution they live under. The first person that takes a stand for his rights and gets gunned down refusing to give in (having been around gun guys my whole life, I KNOW it will happen if it goes that far) will instantaneously become a scapegoat and a martyr, polarizing a healthy chunk of the nation against each other…and things will go downhill very quickly after that.

I think that what will actually happen will fall between the two extremes – (almost) nobody wants full-scale revolution, especially the lawmakers… but what will transpire is anyone’s guess. It’s definitely worth following, in any case.

What do you guys think of this…the potential outcome, the attack on our rights, the absurdity of it all? I would like to hear from both sides of the fence on this issue, if you’d care to join in. I know I have my thoughts on the issue, but I respect everyone’s opinion, and I hope our readers do as well. Let’s hear it!

Stay safe!

Putin Deploys Invasion Force of 80,000 Troops; Border On Lockdown

For those who thought that the crisis in the Ukraine is over because it’s been out of the mainstream news for 72 hours, think again.

According to reports, Vladimir Putin has now deployed a massive military force on the Ukraine/Crimea border. Formerly one country, it has now effectively been split in half, spurring condemnation from the United States and Europe.

In August of 2013 President Obama warned of imminent military action in Syria. He quickly tucked his tail between his legs after Russia hinted that they would launch retaliatory strikes. Now in Ukraine, where US-sponsored intelligence teams likely plotted, organized and executed a “revolution,” Obama’s rhetoric has once again led to a stand off. And for all intents and purposes, western forces have essentially backed down.

If the following is any indication, Vladmir Putin isn’t just talking. Crimea has been annexed. It is now a member state of Mother Russia. The only question is whether or not the Russian President is prepared to cross into Ukraine to “protect” Russian interests.

By all accounts, Putin is preparing for war.

Ukraine warned last night that 80,000 Russian troops were massing on its borders and could invade – as world leaders told Vladimir Putin to back off.

A senior security chief in Kiev said Moscow could launch a full-scale  invasion and Russian troops would be in the Ukrainian capital within ‘two or three hours’ of the order to advance.

Photographs of Russian tanks and armoured personnel carriers close to Ukraine’s borders added to tensions.

Last night senior British officials told the Mail they had received reports about Russian troops massing on the border since Tuesday and were concerned by the show of force.

British intelligence is unsure whether the movements are intended to back up the annexation of Crimea, preparation for an invasion or simply defensive.

The Group of 7 Industrialized nations led by President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron responded to the show of force by threatening action bilateral action.

Leaders of the Group of Seven economies told Russia on Tuesday to stop its work on a referendum in Ukraine’s Crimea region and “cease all efforts to change the status of Crimea” or face action.

“Should the Russian Federation take such a step, we will take further action, individually and collectively,” the G7 statement said.

It’s not clear exactly what the response will be should Russia fail to withdraw.

It should be clear by now that Russia will never, ever give up Crimea.

Crimea, for all intents and purposes, is now lost to the west. The border is in a state of total lock down, complete with mine fields:

To highlight the seriousness of the situation, take a look at the following video depicting a dramatic confrontation on the border as CNN journalists attempt to enter the country.

As far as Russian soldiers are concerned, they are in an Iraq-like war zone and they’re taking no chances.

Here on the home front the American people are anxiously awaiting news of when President Obama and family will be taking their next luxurious golf outing.

E-Bomb: The Electronic Weapon That Can Make a Plane “Disappear”

Over a dozen nations have now mobilized search teams for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The mysterious disappearance has left investigators all over the world wondering what could have happened. This is a huge investigation, as evidenced by the fact that China has re-tasked ten satellites to search for the wreckage, suggesting that the People’s Republic really wants to get to the bottom of what happened here.

There is no debris to be found. The black box, which is supposed to be indestructible in a large explosion and should broadcast a homing signal for up to 30 days, has gone dark. Moreover, INTERPOL is looking into several passengers who boarded the plane using false passports, and whose tickets were reportedly purchased by an unknown Iranian benefactor.

Several theories have emerged as to what could have caused the flight to “vanish” out of thin air. None of them are, as of yet, conclusive.

We can probably rule out a mid-air explosion, because something like that would likely have left instruments operational for long enough that readings would have been transmitted back to flight controllers. Likewise, there would be a fairly wide debris field had such an explosion occurred at such a high altitude.

Terrorism has not been ruled out, but traditional methods, including a hi-jacking, seem unlikely (remember those reinforced cockpit doors?).

It is certainly possible that search teams are just looking in the wrong place and the plane could be found in coming hours or days.

However, as noted by Mike Adams, the idea of an advanced military weapon of some sort is certainly within the realm of possibility. We know our Defense Department, as well as the militaries of other countries, are always hard at work developing new war-making technologies.

One such advanced weapons system has come to public light in recent years and as recently as two days prior to the disappearance of flight 370 Senator Ted Cruz mentioned it in a followup to his CPAC speech:

“When Iran describes Israel as the Little Satan, and America as the Great Satan, we have every interest to make sure they don’t acquire the weaponry to kill millions of Americans.” Cruz imagined a nightmare scenario in which Iran detonated a bomb over “Tel Aviv or New York or Los Angeles.” Detonated here, the effects of an EMP attack could kill “tens of millions of Americans.”

We know for a fact that China, North Korea, Russia and the United States have developed what are dubbed Super-EMP Weapons. These types of weapons require nuclear fuel and must be detonated over or near the target area. The secondary effect of this nuclear detonation is an electro-magnetic pulse. Deployed properly, for example 200 miles over the state of Kansas, such a weapon could literally wipe out every electronic system from coast to coast.

It is this possibility that prompted investigators to contact the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation yesterday, so they understand that this could well be the type of weapons used.

Experts at Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty have been asked to see if they detected an explosion at high altitude of the missing Malaysian Airlines plane.

Lassina Zerbo, executive director of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) told a news conference the organisation used “infrasound” – or infrasonic sensors – to monitor the earth mainly for atmospheric nuclear explosions. (source)

More than likely, the infrasound tests won’t yield any result. For starters, it would be quite difficult to sneak a suit-case nuclear weapon onto an airplane. Second, a space or air explosion would have quickly been detected by military monitoring systems operated by the U.S., China and Russia.

The other possibility is one that is often not discussed, yet has emerged as a highly effective military system in recent years. This involves the use of a non-nuclear electro magentic pulse weapon.

Weapons designers specializing in high-energy physics can now create electromagnetic pulses without going into outer space. One approach involves harnessing the force of a conventional explosion. Others are simply just modifications of radar, which bounces pulses of energy off aircraft in flight, vehicles on the ground, and other objects.

Crank up the power and you have an EMP weapon, ready to point at the computers of your favorite enemy. This knowledge has set off a new arms race. Whether fitted into cruise missiles or parked at the side of the road in a van, non-nuclear EMP weapons have the potential to devastate the electronic systems of areas as large as a city or as small as a selected building, all without being seen, heard, or felt by a single soul.

It is a dream come true for any and all terrorists.

Sound far-fetched? It did not in 1993 to the owners of automobiles parked about 300 meters from a U.S. Defense Contractor’s EMP generator test site at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Their alternators and electronic engine controls were accidentally fried by a pulse during classified field trials.

Source: Military Intelligence Professional Bulletin

The following provides an explanation for how these weapons work. What we know about the Flight 370 disaster suggests that if this was an act of terrorism it could have been executed using a NNEMP:

NNEMP generators can be carried as a payload of bombs, cruise missiles (such as the CHAMP missile) and drones, with diminished mechanical, thermal and ionizing radiation effects, but without the political consequences of deploying nuclear weapons.

The electromagnetic pulse from NNEMP weapons must come from within the weapon, while nuclear weapons generate EMP as a secondary effect. These facts limit the range of NNEMP weapons, but allow finer target discrimination. The effect of small e-bombs has proven to be sufficient for certain terrorist or military operations. Examples of such operations include the destruction of electronic control systems critical to the operation of many ground vehicles and aircraft.

We know for a fact that these e-bombs have been built and tested by our own military. Unlike nuclear-based EMP weapons, these devices can be small and compact versions can actually be created with basic Do-It-Yourself kits. They can be deployed on drones, planes and missiles. They can be specifically targeted at cities, buildings or even vehicles. Thus, it is possible that such a device was used to take down Flight 370.

For the skeptics out there, watch the following video of a do-it-yourself homemade e-bomb being used to short-circuit a cell phone:

In this video, another homemade e-bomb is used to disable various electronics. Note that the rudimentary device looks to have an effective range of roughly 10 – 15 yards:

Now consider what a rogue terror organization or black ops team could do with a multi-million dollar budget.

Harping back to the Iranian connection, is it possible that a small capacity non-nuclear EMP weapon was smuggled on board the airplane, perhaps in common electronic devices, and triggered mid-flight?

That an unknown man named “Ali” purchased tickets for his friends at the last minute to the cheapest destination available, is highly suspect and is indicative of terrorism. An incident involving a man with a similar profile occurred at Amsterdam airport when the Christmas underwear bomber was allowed onto the plane – without a passport.

We’re not necessarily suggesting Iran is behind this, but it sure is an easy story to sell.

Insofar as the effects themselves, a non-nuclear EMP could well explain how a plane, from one second to the next, simply vanishes without a trace.

  • There would be no large debris field because the plane would have fallen right out of the sky, so instead of a search area of square miles, we’d be looking at mere yards, a difficult find in a huge ocean.
  • The homing device on the black box, which as far as we can tell is not shielded against an EMP blast, would, just as the planes instrumentation and communications equipment, short circuit and become inoperable.
  • No explosions or missile signature would have been detected by monitoring systems

While this theory is far from conclusive, it makes as much sense as any being proposed.

If this was the kind of weapon used, then it could have been a “dry run” for something much bigger, like a coordinated attack involving many more planes in the future.

Or, as highlighted by American Everyman, we can just go with the official story per the mainstream media:

So, right on cue, in the absence of a logical thesis, the mainstream media along with “high ranking unnamed sources” are starting to float ridiculousness as the solution.

Officials investigating the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner with 239 people on board suspect it may have disintegrated in mid-flight, a senior source said on Sunday, as Vietnam reported a possible sighting of wreckage from the plane. Reuters

Yes, there you have it, it may have just vaporized itself in mid-air for no apparent reason.

Vaporized? Gone? Nothing remained of this 600,000 pound jumbo jet?

The notion that an e-bomb was responsible is much more likely than vaporization.

And that is a much more terrifying thought to consider.

Focusing on Dental Health & the Devastating Effects If You Don’t

Guest author: Dr. T, DMD

Traditionally survival medical advice has sounded something like this: “Have a medical first aid kit and make sure your dental work is up to date.” This is very good advice. However, I believe the advice should instead be, “Make sure your medical and dental needs are up to date and have a comprehensive first aid kit.” No comprehensive first aid kit is complete without critical dental medicaments and instruments. What happens when there is a dental need and there is either no dentist around or dentists offices are not functioning? Is your first aid kit complete with the necessary materials for such a problem?  This article focuses on three main topics: (1) Why should I focus on dental health? (2) What dental supplies should I include in my kit? and (3) Where can I find a high-quality, dentist-grade supply kit?

Why should I focus on dental health?

It may surprise some, but until the last two generations, most people have needed all of their teeth extracted during their lifetime.  In England few dentitions remained intact much after age 40. Even George Washington was toothless- it hit all social classes. The main reasons for this were lack of proper hygiene, unbalanced diet, and few ways to fix and keep teeth. Modern dentistry has provided many ways to preserve, fix, and even replace teeth, as well as maintain systems for preserving dentition. All of this even in the face of modern diets that have a dramatically more negative effect on tooth lifespan than generations ago. So, what would a combination of generally poorer diets and lack of modern dentistry mean? The answer: dramatically more tooth decay than even in the 19th century!

Dental medicament’s and instruments are unique in their function and critical to maintaining not only one’s teeth but also, in some circumstances, one’s life! Deaths from dental abscesses today are so rare, that it is difficult to fathom that only 200 years ago, this was a leading cause of death. What would life be like in a SHTF scenarios?  Would daily living be similar to 200 years ago? Very likely indeed.  Bartering, growing our own food, being self-sufficient, and, yes, suffering from toothaches, some of which can lead to death!

Search “dental abscess death” in your search engine and you’ll find a myriad of recent tragic, deadly stories. The most alarming part is these deaths are avoidable through modern dentistry.  The problem is, how modern will dentistry be if you don’t have access to its modernity?

If things couldn’t get worse, two of the main causes of tooth loss- periodontal (gum) disease and trauma, are likely to be a greater risk in a SHTF scenario. With regular cleanings unavailable under such circumstances, periodontal disease will dramatically worsen. With changing environments, more exposure to the elements, and more manual labor necessary, trauma will also spike in prevalence.

With the case clear that there will be dental needs when SHTF, what do we do about it?

In the USA, there is only 1 dentist per 1,597 people.[3] In large cities, they are a dime a dozen while in rural areas they are few and far between. When you take away the efficiencies of modern practice and the just in time supply chain of materials (limiting inventory of medicament’s and tools in a dental office) in a prolonged calamity, dentists will be in high demand. In addition, many will have their practices ravaged, ruined, or destroyed, stripping dental offices of all supplies and equipment.  During a sustained event if you, anyone in your group, or anyone around you is going to have dental care available it will be because you have the necessary equipment, tools, and medicament’s as part of your emergency kit to allow a trained professional to care for you.

Lest you think physicians, nurses, or other medical professionals will be able to fill in the gap, these professionals get no training in human tooth extraction and nearly no training regarding the oral cavity. Emergency Room doctors routinely consult dentists regarding where to place the needle to deliver local anesthetic inside the mouth because they do not get it in their training, even though tooth pain is one of the fastest growing reasons for ER visits. It’s not that tooth extraction couldn’t be learned by non-dentists, but it would take training and practice and currently these things are serious crimes under the law, where irreversible processes and potentially life threatening complications are possible.

Dentists will still be around when SHTF as much as anybody, but the supplies to perform their tasks will not. They will disappear just as fast as any medicine, bottle of liquor, or box of ammo. You will need to have the supplies to provide for you and yours if you have a hope of having that toothache dealt with.

What dental supplies should I include in my kit?

The first group of essential supplies are basic dental hygiene supplies:  toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste.  These products are readily available or can be homemade many different ways (see http://besttoothpaste.net/ for an example of homemade toothpaste).  Proper oral hygiene will do more than anything to prevent tooth problems than anything else.

After the basic hygiene supplies, it gets far more challenging because we move into professional supplies with specific indications based on diagnosis, supplies used exclusively by dentists. However, having the correct temporary restorative materials, dental cements, materials and matrixes to make intermediate restorations are all essential to preserving dentition.

Next it is essential to have the proper instrumentation. First, professional hygiene supplies- you know- the instruments the hygienists use when you get your teeth cleaned. These valuable tools not only help keep teeth clean, but prevent periodontal disease (tooth abscess) and dental cavities. They are critical. Second, it’s crucial to have the proper assortment of instruments and forceps for tooth extraction. The correct instruments are essential. You do not want to have an infected broken root that doesn’t come out- that doesn’t solve the problem, rather likely makes it worse. Having the proper instruments used by someone who knows what they are doing, could ultimately mean the difference between life and death.

Up to this point all the materials and instruments are available and can be performed under most circumstances. Worthwhile materials and instruments can be expensive but are within most people’s budget and can be legally purchased. If you have to use these instruments you may lose a few teeth but, the tragedy of death due to tooth abscess will most likely be avoided. More involved and complex dentistry such as, making crowns, doing implants, bonding and root canals all will require significantly more materials, dramatic increases in cost, and a controlled environment.

Where can I find a high-quality, dentist-grade supply kit?

There are thousands of makes and models of dental instruments and even more manufacturers of dental materials. Even dentists can get confused over the differences between economy and professional lines, with numerous varieties of grades and styles, all with their own claims. The costs of these materials vary greatly based on many factors. One suggestion is to talk to your dentist to see what they suggest but because this is an often overlooked area of one’s medical kit there are few resources as to what might be included in the dental segment of the comprehensive kit.  The book, Where There Is No Dentist, by Murray Dickson, is adequate for basic field triage dentistry for the untrained, but does not address what materials ought to be had for real, predictable dentistry performed by trained professionals in calamitous situations.

There are a few dental kits available on the web and a variety of selected instruments can be found on eBay. Until very recently, no kit has had the critical elements of required dental hygiene tools, assorted extraction instruments, and necessary materials, medicaments, and matrixes to place restorations. Those that are available are either completely lacking in proper supplies or the manufacturers are either unknown or untrustworthy. Either way, every kit currently available is not complete.

PrepperDental.com – High Quality, Comprehensive Dental Kit

However, there is a new comprehensive dental kit available that fulfills this need in everyone’s medical first aid kit. Dental Essentials, LLC has recently developed a kit that fulfills each of the requirements necessary to professionally clean teeth, temporarily and intermediately restore teeth, extract broken and infected teeth, and treat oral trauma. This kit can be found at prepperdental.com. All instruments arrive in pre-sterilized pouches ready for use by a professional. The kit comes in a custom cordura nylon case to house each material and instrument accordingly.

The last thing you want is to have the tools for a project, but they are of such poor quality that they do not work as they should. The kit bag and its primary line of essential instruments are all made in the USA of the highest quality and come with a lifetime warranty. The only thing this kit lacks is the anesthetic supplies as they are regulated by the FDA. (In full disclosure- I am a consultant for the kit and I chose the components because they are brands I use every day in my private dental practice.)

In summary, when prolonged calamity comes, daily proper oral hygiene will be the most crucial element in preventing dental problems. However, tooth problems will occur causing significant pain and, in some cases, death. Having a complete dental kit gives you the peace of mind that you will have the materials necessary to avoid these tragedies and maintain your teeth through the difficulties. Having the proper dental materials and instruments is an essential component to any complete medical kit.
