What You Need To Know
On eight occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding safety and security matters. Most important for this report, on Monday, subscribers were informed of a briefing to be made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu within which he presented a cache of 55,000 pages of documents and 183 CDs acquired during a daring Mossad’s operation in Tehran this past February. Described by senior Israeli officials as “the largest intelligence operation in a generation,” the documents and CD’s contained a treasure trove of information proving that Iran had for years been engaged in a secret nuclear weapons program.
Known as Project Amad, the mission statement of the program was to “design, produce and test five warheads, each with ten kiloton yield for integration on a missile.”
The cache — containing tens of thousands of pages weighing a collective half ton — was snatched by Mossad agents in a single night from a warehouse in a suburb south of Tehran, transported via trucks into Azerbaijan, and then flown to Israel.
According to Netanyahu, “Iran lied about never having a secret nuclear program. Secondly, even after the [2015 nuclear] deal, it continued to expand its nuclear program for future use. Thirdly, Iran lied by not coming clean to the IAEA,” adding that, “the nuclear deal is based on lies based on Iranian deception.”
Why is any of this of importance to AlertsUSA subscribers?
In 2015, Tehran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with China, France, Germany, Russia, Britain, and the United States. The deal restricts certain Iranian nuclear activities for periods between 10 to 25 years and allows for more intrusive, permanent monitoring. It also forbids Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons in the future. In exchange, Iran was relieved of crippling economic sanctions.
By law, President Trump must report to Congress every 90 days on whether Iran is complying with the deal, and if it’s in the U.S. national security interest to continue sanctions relief. In addition, the deal the President to periodically waive oil and banking sanctions — so-called “secondary sanctions” — that the agreement lifted. The next deadline for President Trump to waive the secondary sanctions is May 12.
When the President last waived sanctions on January 12, he warned it was “a last chance” to fix the deal’s “terrible flaws” through additional measures. “In the absence of such an agreement,” the President stated that “the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay in the Iran nuclear deal.”
The flaws in the deal of concern to the President, the intelligence community and the Defense Department include literally no provisions whatsoever for limiting Iran’s long-range missile program, the inability of international weapons inspectors to have access to Iranian military sites, as well as “sunset provisions,” which allow certain restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program to expire, rather than last indefinitely.
If President Trump does not act by that date, sanctions would resume on Iran’s oil and banking sectors. In response, Iran could retaliate in a variety of ways ranging from undermining the efforts of Washington and its allies throughout the Middle East, including in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, as well terrorist attacks against the U.S. citizens and interests worldwide, including here at home.
On Tursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Islamic Republic reserves the right to respond should the US, as a party to the 2015 nuclear deal, withdraw from the agreement.
And if you think Iran-backed strikes on the homeland are far-fetched, think again.
According to Rep. Peter King (R., N.Y.), a member of the House Homeland Security Committee and chair of the subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence, there is mounting evidence that Iran in fact poses a “direct threat to the homeland.”
During Congressional hearings less than three weeks ago, Representative King stated a chief concern is “Iranian support for Hezbollah, which is active in the Middle East, Latin America, and here in the U.S., where Hezbollah operatives have been arrested,” referring the recent apprehension of two individuals plotting terror attacks in New York City and Michigan.
Intelligence officials and former White House officials confirmed to Congress on April 17, 2018, that “Iranian agents tied to the terror group Hezbollah has already been discovered in the United States,” and that it would be “relatively easy” for Iran to use its proxies to carry out attacks in the U.S.
During the same hearings, Michael Pregent, an adjunct fellow at the Hudson Institute, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, and former U.S. Army intelligence officer, told the U.S. Congress that Hezbollah was “as good or better at explosive devices than the Islamic State,” “better at assassinations and developing assassination cells,” and “better at targeting.“
Readers are reminded that last week, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for all Muslim nations to “stand united against America and other enemies.” Speaking on state television, Khamenei called on the Muslim world to unite against America and “other domineering powers.”
Additionally, readers are again reminded that the State Department’s annual “Country Reports on Terrorism” continues to list Iran as the world’s “foremost” state sponsor of terrorism.
Once again, AlertsUSA cautions readers that we are now entering into the warmer months which typically heralds an increased tempo of terrorist attacks in Western nations. Then there is the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which begins Tues, May 15. As previously reported by AlertsUSA, Ramadan is typically marked by scores of terrorist attacks. Last year, Ramadan terror attacks were carried out in the United States, multiple locations in Europe, Russia, Australia, Iraq, Syria, Iran, and the Philippines.

Plano, Texas arrested in ISIS-inspired plot to commit mass shooting
A Texas high school student has been arrested on suspicion of plotting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at Frisco’s Stonebriar Centre mall, authorities announced Wednesday. Matin Azizi-Yarand, 17, faces charges of making a terroristic threat and criminal solicitation of capital murder of a Texas peace officer. Authorities say Azizi-Yarand planned to carry out the attack in mid-May with other participants. He had sent more than $1,400 to others to buy weapons and tactical gear, they allege, and had written a “Message to America” explaining his reasons for the attack. Read more here.
