USGOV Issues Travel Alert for Europe
Islamic State Threatens Vatican Attack

What You Need To Know

On five occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding safety and security matters. Beginning Monday, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of a new propaganda poster published by the Islamic State’s media arm suggesting an attack is forthcoming on the Vatican near Christmas. The image shows a masked jihadi driving at high speed towards St Peter’s Square and the Basilica at the Vatican, where the Pope usually holds a large Catholic mass. An assault rifle, rucksack and explosives are clearly visible on the seat next to the driver. Words on the poster read “Christmas Blood, So Wait…”

Readers are reminded that Islamic State, in it’s 2014 declaration of war against the West, stated,

“We will conquer your Rome, break your crosses, and enslave your women.”

The Islamic State, and Islam in general, hold a particular blood lust for Catholics and Rome as more than nine centuries ago, the First Crusade (1096–1099) was called by Pope Urban II, who was alarmed that Muslims were persecuting Christians on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The Second Crusade (1147–1149) was called by Pope Eugene III. In all, eight major Crusade expeditions occurred between 1096 and 1291. In addition, Muslims view Rome, and more specifically, the Vatican, as home base for Christianity, with Christians themselves viewed as enemies of God.

This is not the first time that Islamist groups have threatened or carried out attacks on churches and around Christmas. Examples include last December’s truck attack on a holiday market in Berlin which killed 12 and injured 56, last year’s Istanbul New Year’s Eve nightclub attack, last year’s attack on a Catholic church near Normandy, France within which a priest’s throat was slashed at the altar, and the failed al-Qaeda bombing attempt on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam as the aircraft was preparing to land in Detroit on Christmas Day of 2009.

New Europe Travel Alert

In related news, on Thursday AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of a new Europe-wide travel alert issued by the State Department warning of the heightened risk of terrorist attacks, and in particular, during the holiday season.

According to the alert, extremists continue to focus on tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities as viable targets. In addition, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, high-profile events, educational institutions, airports, and other soft targets remain priority locations for possible attacks.

Individuals planning travel abroad (to Europe or elsewhere) during the end-of-year holidays are STRONGLY encouraged to take some time to investigate the terror threat levels in your destination countries, to have the address and contact information for the nearest U.S. Embassy, and to be registered with the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.Developing a mindset of security awareness and preparedness is essential given the times.

If new threats develop, AlertsUSA is one of your best options for staying informed.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the overall domestic and international threat environment, and will immediately notify service subscribers via SMS messages of new alerts, warnings and advisories or any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.

Are You A Prepper Or A Hoarder? (Heres How To Tell the Difference)

Even though your stockpile may fit the definition of a “hoard,” chances are quite high that you are NOT actually a “hoarder” in the contemporary and now commonly used sense of the word.

The contemporary and common use of the word “hoarder” indicates a person who accumulates things in a disorganized, messy, emotional and non-functional manner. Hoarders typically hold onto non-utilitarian (even broken) things, and collect to the point where their living space does not work for its intended function. When you hear or read the word “hoarder,” the image of a pack rat house stuffed to the rafters with every table top covered and only narrow spaces to walk through comes to mind. The hoarder is driven by emotion. The items hoarded do not serve a useful function and tend to actually interfere with the individual’s capacity to function or use their living space as intended.

In contrast, a prepper’s main goal is a functional supply of items. Preppers accumulate items with a plan and a purpose, and prioritize the collection and storage of items in an organized manner.

The definition of a prepper (according to Urban Dictionary) is: “A person who believes a catastrophic disaster or emergency is likely to occur in the future and makes active preparations for it, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies.”

You are a prepper if the majority of the following statements are true:

  1. Your stockpile and home are reasonably clean.
  2. The items you stockpile are functional.
  3. Your stockpile is organized.
  4. You can use the items you are storing within your lifetime.
  5. You agree with the saying “store what you eat and eat what you store.”
  6. You are prepared. You do not have to go to the store to “pick up a few things” when a major storm is predicted.

You are a hoarder if three or more of the following statements is true:

1. Items in your house are taking over space or furniture meant for eating, sleeping, walking, or other normal human activities.

2. Despite the fact that items in your house are taking over space and furniture meant for eating, sleeping, walking or other activities, you are emotionally attached to these items and reluctant to let them go.

3. You are storing non-functional items. For example, broken items, or perhaps stacks of newspapers, or stacks of magazines, plastic bags, shoes or any particular item or groups of things for which there is no realistic use or functional purpose for amount stored. How does this differ from a collection? A collection is organized and/or has monetary or sentimental value. These items do not.

4. Your items have been gathered without a plan, and you’ll organize them “someday.”

5. During a resource shortage, you collect more than you need, or more than you can reasonably use, and you hide these resources away (in comparison, a prepper will already have resources stored and will not rush out to secure more).

6. You do not have the food and supplies at home needed to get through a three-day power outage without running to the store to “pick up a few things.”

Survival Dentistry

Dental care is pertinent to our health. Most tooth decay and periodontal disease (gum disease) are caused by a lack of proper dental hygiene and an unbalanced diet. While there are few deaths from dental problems today, it wasn’t that long ago that most people, regardless of social class, had to have their teeth extracted in order to keep their body healthy and alive. In a TEOTWAWKI situation, with the poor diets that many have today, there are bound to be many deaths from dental problems.

The main mode of defense against these dental problems is taking control of them right now. Proper dental care now can keep you healthy and happy now and in an SHTF situation.

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day keeps gum inflammation down and teeth clean of bacteria, which can cause cavities and tooth decay.
  • Flossing is an important part of dental routine that many of us forget. It clears the bacteria from teeth and gums, and debris that toothbrushes alone cannot.
  • Regular visits to the dentist twice a year allows the hygienist to thoroughly clean the teeth and make sure there are no further dental problems such as periodontal disease or cavities.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Eating a balanced diet of fruits, veggies and whole grains will keep your body health and your mouth healthy, which is pertinent to survival now or in a TEOTWAWKI situation.

In the wake of a disaster, dentists will be in high demand as regular cleanings become unavailable. Eventually dentists will close altogether because their supplies and instruments will become unavailable. In order to prepare for this situation, it is important to prepare a survival dental kit.

  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss are essential dental care items to have in your dental prep kit, as they are the first line of defense in prevention of tooth decay and periodontal disease.
  • Peroxide is widely used to sanitize the mouth and whiten teeth and is dirt cheap to stock up on. Be careful though; overusing peroxide can cause an oral yeast infection.
  • Coconut oil. Coconut oil is used for what’s called “oil puling,” a technique that has apparently been used in the ancient world to draw toxins out of your mouth and ensure dental health.
  • Oil of Cloves. This is an age-old remedy for tooth aches. Rubbing this on a tooth can relieve a toothache and when mixed with zinc oxide powder, it can be made into a thick filling for a cavity. Beeswax can also be used to make fillings if necessary.
  • Oregano oil. This handy oil helps kill infections, heal your gums and alleviate dental pain.
  • Other home remedies for relieving toothaches and numbing a tooth that can be used in the wake of disaster, such as a cotton ball soaked in alcohol, icepacks, baking soda dissolved in water, and warm salt water.
  • Dental Hygienist tools, which include a mouth mirror, tongue scraper, and interdental cleaners of various shapes and sizes to make sure your teeth and mouth are free of harmful bacteria when you can’t regularly visit a dentist.
  • Forceps, pliers, or sturdy tweezers will be necessary in order to pull teeth out if they are decaying or causing gum disease. There are also older tools such as dental keys that can be used to extract a tooth if necessary, although these have been known to break the tooth off, causing further dental infection or disease, or break the jaw.

Remember that extractions will be painful and your anesthesia will probably involve ice (or a large brick), so do whatever you can to keep your teeth in good shape to avoid dealing with actual restorative work after SHTF. If your teeth are in a really bad shape, my advice to you is to get good quality dentures or implants while you can.

Dental care is essential to our health and it begins with prevention. To prepare yourself and your survival dental kit, check out www.doomandbloom.net for the essential instruments and supplies and Murray Dickson’s book Where There is No Dentist.

In normal times, seek modern professional dental care where available. How To Handle Domestic Refugees When SHTF

A major crisis will create multiple waves of refugees. In time, these refugees can become a major problem for the entire world. The conflict in Syria and the Paris attacks are just recent examples of what human exodus can lead to. When SHTF, there will be a lot of domestic refugees roaming around and we should be prepared to handle them.

Although I understand why people are concerned about refugees and I agree that they shouldn’t be allowed on U.S. soil, there is something else that concerns me. Some people fail to understand that there will be a bigger problem if a major disaster happens in America. If some apocalyptic event happens in our country, we should expect a vast number of “domestic refugees”.

What are domestic refugees?

The people you work with, the people you know and even distant relatives you haven’t heard from in a while, they can all become domestic refugees. These are the people that are forced to migrate inside their own country. They will be forced to do so when a major disaster occurs in their area and they are left without any other alternative. Some call them “the unprepared”, but in reality, it can happen to anyone. It all depends on the type of disaster that affects their lives. If you are a prepper or an off-gridder, your chances of survival are higher than for the common citizen. However, sooner or later you will have to deal with these domestic refugees.

Should we be concerned about domestic refugees in America?

Yes we should. I will give you just a recent example of a potential crisis scenario that will create a large number of domestic refugees. If you haven’t lived under a rock for the past five years, you might be aware of the NASA warnings regarding the solar activity. NASA has been issuing these warnings for years and the White House admitted that they started to prepare for this scenario. You can imagine that a massive CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) is no joke. It will create an EMP that will cripple the country.

In the 12 to 15 hours warning there will be chaos. It will put in motion a series of events that will affect us all, regardless of where we live. I won’t get into details about how to survive an EMP attack because I’ve written about it in a previous article. However, I want to talk about the result of such event, the domestic refugees.

How will domestic refugees behave?

Human history has showed us how people act when resources are scarce. They either migrate to a friendlier environment or they risk it all and try to survive with what their current environment has to offer. This might have worked in the past when people weren’t dependent on technology as they are today. In our modern times, once the resources from an area are cannibalized, people will move to the next area. They will continue to do so until they find a place to settle. Unfortunately, very few have the knowledge to survive and start over with what they can find in a particular environment. Even if there are those who will start over, things will not go smooth because they will have to fend off wave after wave of domestic refugees.

People are concerned about refugees that are being brought to the U.S.  They fear that they can be armed and indoctrinated to attack American citizens. Once again, I do agree that this is a possibility, but that’s not the only thing we should worry about. Once SHTF, we will have no other choice than to deal with domestic refugees because time creates desperation. The longer they will struggle to survive the more desperate they will become. The worst part is that most of them already have all the guns they need and they know how to use them.

As time goes by, it will become a fight for survival. We have to understand that not only external refugees can become a problem if SHTF. Land and resources are the main reasons for starting a conflict. Before we prepare for external threats, we should also be able to handle the local ones.

How to deal with domestic refugees?

I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again, if you are a lone wolf, your chances of survival are limited. There is safety in numbers and you should have your own survival group if you want to survive when SHTF. You should have a post collapse community and you should make sure all aspects of community organization and leadership are covered. If you are part of a survival group you will be able to deal with domestic refugees.

Once you are part of a community you will need to have rules. Rules relating to those who show up at the perimeter of the community. Make no mistake, people will come and they will request access. You have to consider that each person allowed in will be one more mouth that needs to be fed. Every decision the leader makes will affect the community.

When it comes to domestic refugees asking for access I suggest following these guidelines:
  1. Access can be granted if the person is known to own property within the community. Only if he or she can prove ownership of said propriety. Such proof could be in any form of identification that shows the address or other residents vouching for them.
  2. Access can be granted if the person is a family member of a current resident and if the said resident acknowledges responsibility for him or her. If residents of the community cannot accommodate relatives a voting process is required to make sure everyone is on board with the decision.
  3. Access can be granted if the person is able to prove that he or she possesses specific skills that are needed within the community. Every survival group has different strengths and weaknesses. Individuals should be allowed in, only if they can increase the strength of the community. This will require a vetting process and residents possessing similar skills should be involved.

If the refugees have no propriety or familial connection within the community or the ability to offer necessary skills and experience, they should be sent on their way.

Some refugees will request food and water if they are not allowed in, but there will be no room for charity. There will never be sufficient supplies to give away. It might sound harsh or even cruel, but the needs of the community members come first.

When it comes to removing domestic refugees from the perimeter of the community, you have two options:
  1. Deny them access, at gunpoint if necessary. It will very likely come to that if people are desperate.
  2. Escort them along a specific route through the town to the other side.

You should not detain them and you should explain clearly that they need to move along. Regardless the option you chose, there are some pros and cons you need to be aware of.

If you deny them access and ask them to leave, there is the risk of them attempting to enter the community through an unobservable point. Even if you have the area patrolled, you won’t be able to keep it under 24/7 surveillance. The good part about this approach is that if it works, the outsiders won’t see what’s inside at all. They will not be able to carry word about what you have and won’t make a target out of your location.

If you decide to escort them through the community, you have the guarantee that they’ve moved on and you are able to keep an eye on them until they do so. The bad part is that you will basically give them a guided tour of the community and this puts you in a vulnerable position. They will use the knowledge against you or they can trade the information to someone else down the line.

Regardless of what you decide, it is important that everyone involved understand that the rules need to be enforced equally and to the letter. The guards should be given a clear list of desirable skills and they shouldn’t let someone in just because the refugee is attractive.

Any refugee that poses any of the skills desired by the community should be detained in a location near the gate until questioned further.

As I’ve said before, the needs of the communities will vary based on the number of members, location and available resources.

Some of the most desirable skills are:
  • Medical (including natural and herbal healing)
  • Veterinary
  • Dental
  • Security
  • Food preservation
  • Blacksmithing and woodworking
  • Gunsmithing

All potential new members should be quarantined for at least a couple of days before being granted access to the community. They should be examined by medical staff to ensure they are not carrying illnesses or parasites. You don’t want to introduce a new problem in the community so make sure new members are being given the medical treatment they need. The quarantine should be located near the outskirts of the community to prevent the spread of any disease the refugees may be carrying.

Each new member should be questioned and the quarantine time is the proper time to do so. They should be questioned about the world at large as they are the ones who can provide an exact picture of what is happening outside. What they saw, what they heard are details that can become crucial to the survival of the community.

Each new member should be supervised and educated to make sure they can integrate into the community. They should learn the basic rules of the community and acknowledge the chain of command. They should be supervised to make sure that they understand and respect any specific rules of the community and to prevent them from getting into trouble. Some of these rules can differ greatly from what is considered common sense.

When it comes to long-term survival scenarios safety in numbers is the number one rule. You can’t make it without a community and you have better chances of facing those who survive the initial disaster, the domestic refugees.

Church Security Becomes Top Priority Following Texas Mass Shooting Incident

November 11, 2017

On Nov 5th, the following related Flash SMS messages were sent to AlertsUSA subscriber mobile devices:

11/5 – AlertsUSA monitoring reports of mass casualty shooting incident, First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs, TX (E of San Antonio). Add’l alerts as warranted.

11/5 – TX Dept of Public Safety: 27 dead (incl suspect), 20 injured in church shooting earlier today.

What You Need To Know

Last Sunday, AlertsUSA subscribers were some of the first in the nation to learn of reports of a mass casualty shooting incident at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, located about about 30 miles east of the city of San Antonio. In what would turn out to be the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in Texas, one of the deadliest in the United States, as well as the deadliest shooting in an American place of worship in modern history, the gunman, 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, methodically killed 26 and injured 20. Kelly was himself shot twice by a civilian as he exited the church. Fleeing in his SUV, the suspect crashed after a high-speed chase and was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

As would be expected, large churches and small-town houses of worship across the U.S. are organizing security teams, practicing active shooter drills and beefing up physical security measures to counter a growing threat from crazed individuals as well as calls for attack on churches and other holiday gathering sites by groups such as the Islamic State.

Readers are reminded that less than one year ago, Islamic State sympathizers circulated a list of US churches via a militant social media site and called on supporters to attack them during the holiday season. At that time, the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and National Counterterrorism Center issued a joint intelligence bulletin “intended to remind security planners and first responders to remain vigilant for indications of nefarious operational planning this holiday season.”

Readers are also reminded that early last year, knife wielding Islamists’ stormed into a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray France, forced the priest to his knees, slit his throat and filmed themselves appearing to preach in Arabic at the altar. The two hostage-takers were shot dead by police as they came out of the church shouting “Allahu akbar.”

AlertsUSA encourages responsible gun owners of faith to reach out to their church leadership and offer to help secure the premises during services and other gatherings. In addition to local police departments who are always willing to perform security reviews and to step up patrols, there are also dozens of private sector organization offering courses and guidance to groups taking on these responsibilities.

While it is rare that AlertsUSA engages in editorializing, we feel it is important to point out that if guns are responsible for killing people, then pencils are responsible for spelling errors. The problem is not the guns. The problem is the rapidly changing morality and sanctity for life in our culture, and as such, increased vigilance and security awareness is paramount.

New DHS Bulletin Warns of Terrorist Use of Drones, Chemicals and Ongoing Threats to Aviation

November 11, 2017

Between Nov. 7-9, the following related Flash SMS messages were sent to AlertsUSA subscriber mobile devices:

11/9 – DHS updates and extends National Terrorism Advisory Bulletin due to continuing threat of terrorists focused on striking the US. See your email for add’l info.

11/7 – New audio recording from Hamza Bin Laden, son of UBL, calls on Muslims to target Americans worldwide to avenge death of father. See email for more info.

What You Need To Know

On Thursday AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of the release of an updated National Terrorism Advisory Bulletin by the Department of Homeland Securitywarning of the continuing terror threat to the U.S.. According to the bulletin, the U.S. continues to face one of the most challenging terrorism threat environments since 9/11 as foreign terrorist organizations exploit the Internet to inspire, enable, or direct individuals already here in the homeland to commit terrorist acts.

The bulletin explains that individual terrorists and groups increasingly rely on technology, such as end-to-end encrypted social media applications, to avoid detection, and via these methods, urge groups to adopt easy-to-use tools to target public places and events. Specific tactics have included the use of vehicle ramming, small arms, straight-edged blades or knives, homemade explosives, and poisons or toxins.

Readers are cautioned that violent extremist media regularly encourages individuals worldwide to launch attacks using all means possible, and ongoing battlefield losses for the Islamic State may encourage homegrown terrorists to carry out acts of violence in the homeland instead of attempting to travel overseas to fight. Additionally, such attacks may also be carried out by foreign fighters who have acquired training and battle-tested experience with a desire to conduct attacks elsewhere, including within the United States.

Ongoing Aviation Sector Threat

Of particular importance is the ongoing threat to the aviation sector, including through the use of concealed explosives. It is important to note that on the 2017 anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s master bomb maker, Ibrahim al-Asiri, issued an audio message within which he vows to continue targeting America for attacks.

Asiri is direcly credited with multiple previous attempted attacks on commercial aircraft, including the failed Christmas 2009 attempt to bring down an airliner near Detroit by underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, as well as the October 2010 attempt to bring down cargo aircraft using bombs built into printer toner cartridges. While Asiri is most well known by the public in the West for his bomb failures, he is in fact responsible for a host of highly successful attacks using innovative explosive device designs across the Middle East which have claimed hundreds of lives, including his own brother. In this incident, Asiri somehow managed to talk his brother into packing his rectum with explosive material in an attempt to kill a Saudi government official.

How To Bug-in And Survive

Bugging in can be defined as staying in your house and holding down the fort during an emergency situation. If you have everything you need in your home in order to survive there is no need to leave and head for a distant location. You will have to bug out only if there are solid reasons to do so. Reasons that are usually a threat for you and your loved ones. Even though the trend is to bug out and there is a lot of literature dedicated to it, for some this isn’t an option. In fact, bugging in is usually the first choice for suburban and urban preppers when a crisis occurs. Since, not everyone has the chance to go for the hills or get access to a bug out location (BOL) is better to know what to do in order to bug-in and survive.

When I’m discussing with my friends and family about preparedness, the number one question I always hear is: what disaster should I prepare for?

The answer is never simple and I tell them to first make a list with what disasters are most likely to occur in their area. Afterwards they should start preparing for the disaster that is most probable to occur and work their way down on the list. There are many factors that have an influence on the level of preparedness for each family. However, the most important one is the budget. The reality is that you have to prepare for as many disasters as you possibly can. You should do so without affecting your quality of life, social exposure and monthly budget. Although it may prove hard to do it, the best part is that many preparedness actions will be useful for different types of emergencies.

Before taking the decision to bug-in, there are some common sense questions that have to be acknowledged. They will provide the definitive answer to the question: to bug-in or to bug out?

You should ask yourself this before you decide to bug-in or bug out:

What is the number one threat for me and my family and how likely it is to occur?

What will happen with my house if it does take place? Will it affect the integrity of my house?

How long is the crisis going to last? Do I have all the supplies I need to survive that long?

Will there be an imminent danger for me and my loved ones if I bug-in? Am I staying because of comfort and because I don’t want to leave?

Is bugging out a safer option? If so, where will I bug out and how should I get there?

Is my BOL safer than my current location and does it have the supplies I need?

Based on the answers you get to these questions, you can take a decision and do the best thing.

If you have decided to bug-in, you have to know that it will require a lot of planning. You need to have short term plans (to survive on your own for a year) and long term plans (to survive on your own indefinitely). You should take each plan one step at the time, to avoid getting lost in the big picture. Try to prepare, to survive for a week, then for two and aim for a month. Do so on until you can live for a year without outside help. Most emergency situations will be under control in less than a week, so you should have at least enough water and food supplies to last that long.

Here is what you should do in order to bug-in safely.

Asses the integrity of your shelter

Your house might be damaged if a natural disaster occurs in you are. You have to make sure the structural integrity isn’t affected. If the walls or support beams have been damaged, the house could collapse and it’s better to move out. You should have at least 2-3 tarps that you can use to cover holes in the walls, broken windows, roof holes, etc. These are a temporary solution until you are able to rebuild or repair the damage. Also, you’re going to need a good tent. It will serve as a temporary shelter if your house is damaged and as a permanent location if you don’t have a BOL.

Another thing you have to do in order to assure the integrity of your house is to shut down the utilities. If your house is still standing you don’t want it to catch fire or get flooded. Installing shut off valves and labeling them accordingly should be a must for every house regardless if you bug-in or bug out.

Water, you must store water!

Regardless the nature of the crisis, you’re going to need water and lots of it if you bug-in. You won’t last much without at least half a gallon of water per day. Water takes up a lot of space and this is why most survival experts will advise you to store at least one month of water supply. You should also find other options to obtain water without wasting storage space. There are many ways to obtain drinkable water, even when you bug in:

  • Get a commercial water filter or make your own. Here are some tips on how to make one if you’re out in the open.
  • Collect contaminated water, boil or distill it.
  • Collecting rain water.
  • Acquire purification tables or use bleach to purify the water. You need to add between 10 and 20 drops of bleach per gallon of water.
  • Get a bath tub storage bag – this is plastic bag that can hold between 50 and 100 gallons of water. Amazon sells many models.

The main idea here is that you shouldn’t use all your storage space to stockpile water, but instead, you should have as many ways to purify water as possible.

Another alternative is to make a device that makes water out of air. Being able to produce your own clean water is vital when you bug-in.

Don’t starve, store some food

A stockpile of food is a must. Just like water, you have to make sure it lasts if you bug-in. Use the same tactic as you did for water storage. Aim to stockpile a week supply of food, move on to a month, aim for 3 months and so on. Of course that here the options are many and it is all up to you of what you buy or make. A good pantry will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. I’ve explained in an article about what are the essential foods for a good survival pantry.

When people ask me what they can do to stockpile food without breaking the bank I tell them to use some simple tricks: do a list with what you need, during your shopping trips, buy 2-3 extra cans of food, buy local, buy in season , buy in bulk and buy with discount coupons.

When buying canned goods, you have to keep in mind to rotate to the stock you have. Old cans to the front, new ones to the back. Another method is to make your own food, you can dry it and store it in airtight containers. Learn from this article how you can dry your food without breaking a sweat. Stockpiling food is great and it should be done with minimal costs. You should aim for at least 10 months of food as you never know for how long do you have to bug-in.

Even with stockpiling one question still remains: what can you do when food runs out?

The answer is simple: Learn how to make your own food and have a sustainable food source. Save seeds and plant a garden, learn how to fish and hunt if the area you live in provides these options. If the space allows it, raising chickens and rabbits will provide you with eggs and meat. Get your hands on an ingenious method to produce your own food and become self-sufficient. Aquaponics is a simple one to build. You should start to learn from time or at least gather the necessary info to have it available when you bug-in. An iPad full with self-sufficiency books will become priceless.

You need to stay warm when you bug-in

Depending on the time of the year and the part of the state you live in, heat will be one of your top priorities when you bug-in. You will need a source of heat since extreme cold will cause the core temperature of your body to drop and hypothermia sets in. A source of heat is a must if you want to stay warm when electricity will be just a memory. The best option would be to have a wood burning stove or fireplace installed. Something that can be used as a source of heat and as a cooking place. Make sure you also have a plenty of blankets, quilts and covers or a good sleeping bag.

The more ways you have to stay warm, the better your chances of survival are. One word of advice: if you improvise a heat source, from a barrel drum or candles you should have some battery-powered CO detectors, they might save your life.

You will need an electricity generator if you want to bug-in

A generator is good for many reasons, from cooking to charging your devices and power up tools. Having a generator running on fossil fuel might not be a good idea when you bug-in and here is why. First, you will eventually run out of fuel and you will have to scavenge for more fuel if you want to keep it going. Second, you will get used to it and with having electricity, and in a survival situation the sooner you learn how to live without electricity the better it will be. And third, generators running on fuel are not silent. If you want to stay under the radar when you bug-in, you will have to reconsider your options.

The best choice would be to go for a solar generator. You can charge it by day and use it by night, without attracting unwanted attention. There are so many models out there that it’s a matter of personal choice and budget. Amazon is full of generators, it all depends on your budget and how much are you willing to spend. Try to get a generator that is portable, that you can take with you in case you are forced to leave.

Regarding electricity and light in general, this can be both a good and a very bad thing. If you bug-in, you are going to need light at night to avoid stumbling in the dark. It is better to have multiple sources of light in your hose, a flashlight for every room. A LED lamp will do wonders, but it will also act like a beacon in the night for the other survivors roaming outside your house. If you are trying to stay out of sight when you bug-in, you will have to avoid using any light source during the night. Board up your house so that no light leaks out.

Another thing you should do when you bug-in, is to avoid spending too much time in a room that’s lit up with light. If something happens and you need to go outside, you’re not going to be able to see for a few moments. If you are attacked, those moments could make the difference between life and death.

Protect your fort if you bug-in

During an emergency, if you have secured the basic items for survival like water, food and shelter, the next thing you have to worry about is how to stay safe and protect your loved ones. The police won’t help you because they have to take care of their families. This means that the only protection you’ll going to get is the one you’re providing, for both you and your family. We all know that during a crisis the crime rate increases. Criminals know how to take advantage of these types of situations. There will be a lot of rioting and looting in a prolonged crisis.

Safety in numbers works for both homeowners and outsiders. If you have friends and neighbors who are prepared as you are, you can lock down the neighborhood and keep the looters outside. This would work in an ideal world, but during an emergency situation, most certainly, it will be every man for himself. Your most realistic options to survive are the following: make your home as hard to get into as possible. Arm yourself with weapons you can use and hold the fort down. From this article you can learn about weapons recommended for self-defense, ideal for when you bug-in.

You can install metal doors capable of being bolted shut. You can get a guard dog, you can install bars across the windows and so on. There are many methods to fortify your house when you bug-in.

Stay clean, personal hygiene is important!

If you bug-in, you need to stay healthy and you have to stay clean. Unfortunately, when water is scarce, personal hygiene will not be a priority for many. Even if you bug-in and you are alone, you still need to wash up and brush your teeth every day. A clean body will make you more comfortable and keep you healthy. Be sure to buy and stockpile unscented baby wipes as they will keep you clean without wasting precious water.

You will also have to stockpile on other items such as toilet paper, toothbrush and toothpaste (or make your own) and tampons. Using the toilets if you bug-in is a bad idea, therefore you are going to poop in an improvised toilet. You can either dig a hole in your yard or improvise a toilet out of a garbage can or paint bucket. You will need to line the bucket with a plastic bag so make sure to stockpile on plastic garbage bags.

Medical care will be needed at some point

Since the hospitals will be empty, you will be the best doctor you can find if you bug-in. This is why you will need a good medical kit. You will also have to stockpile on medication before you bug-in. If you have an understanding doctor, one that knows how to listen, chances are he or she will prescribe extra medication. So the best thing to do is be honest with your doctor and see how it plays out. Another thing you might want to do is to enroll in as many first aid and survival classes as you can afford.

The more you learn, the better off you’ll be. Here is where your IPad, once again, will come in handy. Try to get as many first aid and field surgery books as you can. Look up for medical courses, designed for emergency situations. The following list of supplies should be added to your medical kit: ace bandages, activated charcoal, allergy medication, alcohol, aloe vera, antacid, aspirin, band-aids, bandages, burn cream (learn how to treat burns from this article), compress dressing, cold packs, gauze, gloves, hydrogen peroxide, needle and thread, neosporing, pain relievers, petroleum jelly, snake bite kit, slings, surgical kit, tap, thermometer, tweezers, etc.

You can add to it as you see fit. I’ve read that some preppers add to their emergency aid kit even medical equipment like defibrillators. Don’t do that, unless you have proper training on how to use these machines. And last, but not least, if a medical emergency is too much for you to handle you have to seek professional medical care. Your best chance in this case will be your family doctor. Most probably, during a crisis, he will be at home attending to his family. Look for his address and look for his help.

Take care of your dead if you bug-in

This topic has hardly been discussed among the peppers’ communities. This is because no one wants to think about having to dispose of dead bodies, especially those of friends or loved ones. The reality is, in a bad crisis, there could be bodies piled up everywhere. The earthquake from Nepal is a fresh reminder of this horrific scenario. If you have to dispose of a body and you want to give a proper burial, you will have to bury the body 3 feet under to prevent disease transmission.

You don’t have to build a coffin as it will require for you to dig a bigger hole and it can be a backbreaking labor. You can wrap the body in cloth before burial, it won’t matter in the long run. Another option is cremation and for it to work you will need to stack logs on top and around the body, it may take time but it can be done. If you bug-in you have to take care of the dead ones, and I’m not talking about zombies here (except when man becomes zombie).

Get some vice items, they could save your life!

When everything goes up in smoke, paper currency will become useless. Even though precious metals might be of value, there are other items that will be wanted by everyone. We humans, are a specie enslaved by our vices. It doesn’t matter if it’s the latest gadget or a good bottle of Jack Daniels. If we want it, we will have it!

During a crisis the first stores that are being looted are the liquor stores and smoke shops. It’s happening even today. During the Baltimore riots, they didn’t steal food or water, they went for the vice items.

When these supplies run out, some people are going to have intense cravings for them. Having a good stock of these items will put you in a position of power. If you can protect yourself, you can use these items to barter with people who have the supplies you need. When you decide to bug-in you should stock up on cheap alcohol and tobacco (or make your own). You might find yourself in advantage in a crisis if you have those items. Read more  about the barter items you should have for SHTF.

If you’re prepared for multiple disasters and you know how to bug-in, you’re going to be in much better shape than those who didn’t prepare for anything.

The 10 Principles Of Effective Family Survival

They say that every survival scenario defines a case of survival of the fittest. You might think you can make it, regardless of what the world throws at you, but what if you’re not alone? If you have loved ones depending on you, family survival becomes your main priority.

That being said, sometimes a group has better odds of surviving under the right leadership. Regardless if you prepare for or with your family, there are some principles you need to implement. Groups with great leaders can pretty much accomplish anything. Being a survival leader and the head of the family isn’t easy. You already struggled to build a family, now is the time to develop them into a survival group.

No matter how you look at things, being part of a dysfunctional team, can lead to disaster during an emergency situation. They may not all agree with your rules and plans for the future, but you can’t distance yourself from them. You should never see those close to you as expendables and you should always value them.

Just like you put a lot of effort into your prepping plans, human relationships need nurturing to survive. There is a natural tendency for families to get along since blood is thicker than water, but never take this for granted. As days turn into weeks and months, bad feelings can start to fester and frustration can pile up. Exposing your family members to an austerity scenario with no electricity, no water and no food can cause alienation.

To make family survival work, it takes an empathetic leader who can keep an eye on both the mission and his or her family.

Below are the 10 principals of effective family survival:

  1. Always show them love

Your family knows when you care about them and also when you don’t. Put your family first, regardless how busy you are. Be dedicated and loyal to them, even if it seems that you don’t have enough time for your prepping chores. Love in a family, loyalty and trust should never be taken for granted. Learn about their hobbies and preoccupations and show genuine interest in their lives. You shouldn’t assume that they will later understand and thank you for your effort. They might not stick around long enough to appreciate all you’re doing for them right now.

  1. Keep a healthy and fit family

Becoming a couch potato and letting your kids spend hours on the computer or game console is a toxic habit. If your family is out of shape or ill, you will tire more quickly and lack the stamina to survive. Tired people have less patience and quickly lose focus of what they are supposed to do. Family survival is impossible without a good health and physical shape of all its members. Is hard to care about anything else if you are exhausted or suffering.

  1. Keep everyone informed

Many people new to prepping have the tendency of keeping their kids in the dark. They are reluctant to share information about their prepping plans. It seems just too much for the kids or relatives to handle. As a family leader, you should learn how to talk to your kids about emergency preparedness. There is no safety net out in the real worlds and there are no prizes for trying when it comes to survival. When you’re confronted by relatives and friends, don’t argue and don’t impose your point of view. Briefly explain your course of action and the reasons behind your prepping plans. It they care about you, they will understand and respect your decision.

  1. Set an example

I come from a family line of hard working people that lived life with modesty and dignity. In all my life, I have never heard the words “it’s not possible” or “it can’t be done”. The way you guide your family in life reflects in everything you do. You should always be an example for them. Work hard and avoid being viewed as lazy. My grandfather used to say that ambition, good attitude and kindness are infectious. If you want your kids to learn about the world, you need to show them what’s out there. Spend time with them in the nature and allow them to figure things out on their own.

  1. Turn your family into a team

Set goals for your family members, inspire vision and establish responsibilities for each of them. Listen to their feedback and reward their patience when it comes to your prepping plans. Family survival is not possible if only one person struggles for all the others. If you want to maximize results, you need to make it a common effort. Even small children can accomplish big tasks by what it seems like playing for them.

  1. Be truthful

Credibility is a fragile thing inside a divided family. Do not lie to your family, because sooner or later they will figure it out. If the situation is critical, there is no need to sugar coat it, unless some of them can’t cope with the reality. If they have the proper age and mindset, it’s better to lay your cards on the table. Don’t lose your temper when confronted with bad news. It will make people around you lose confidence and they will lie as a self-defense mechanism.

  1. Take responsibility

Understand that you’re not superman and that nobody’s perfect. Don’t pretend to be more than you are and be accountable for your mistakes. Rather than covering something up and see how things develop. Make the corrections in time and apologize as needed.  Family survival requires you to be bold. Taking unnecessary risk means making mistakes. Not taking risks when situation requires it and playing it safe can have a diminishing return.

  1. Be tolerant

Zero tolerance is required if someone undermines your authority when leading a survival group.  However, this is not a group of random people, they are your family! You should provide adequate support for all your family members and take time to explain your actions. The “do as I say” mentality can backfire. You need to keep everyone united and you can’t do that if you push them around.

  1. Don’t forget to keep a good attitude

Things may seem grim, but remember that relaxed and funny people are a natural anti-depressant. Even if you have no power, and the weather outside is turning bad, you can still keep a good attitude. Humor is essential for family survival, especially if you have young ones. It is an important trait to deal with stress and can significantly boost the mood of your family.

  1. Communicate with and encourage your family member

I see a lot of parents criticize their children in public and they don’t realize how much harm they are causing. Praise in public and criticize in private is what my grandmother used to say. Tell your family members what you want them to accomplish and not how to do it. Keep instructions simple and concise and always ask for feedback. Trust the knowledge of your family members, but be ready to take charge when things get rough. After any crisis that affects your family you should discuss about the following:

  • What did we do wrong this time?
  • What did we do right?
  • How can we improve our preparations?

Family survival requires good leadership and involves much more than telling them what to do. Family survival is about being a better person for them. Encouraging them to learn new things and keeping them informed is what makes a good team. Leading your loved ones is the hardest job during a crisis scenario, but you should never give up on them.

All Alone For The End Of The World

Prepper's Will - Seeking friend for the end of the world

Hardcore survivalists and preppers cherish the lone-wolf scenario. It goes something like this: The world is crumbling and cities collapse into mayhem. We,the preppers are well equipped for the end of the world. We are the last chance of humanity since we can withstand anything faith throws at us. Our society is no longer built on everyday trust and neighborly reliance, but do you want to be alone in the end?

Do you really want to be alone for the end of the world?

The world around us is full of unfriendly strangers and nobody cares anymore about the person next to him. If the other guy doesn’t take care of himself…well, then to hell with him and his legacy. It’s a dog eat dog world and only the fittest survive. The media keeps bombarding us with nothing but violence, tragedy and sadness. It’s us or them!

And it is true, in any major, long-term disaster, preppers and survivalists could face deadly threats from desperate and unprepared people. The only problem when it comes to “them” is that they are much more numerous than us and a lone-wolf scenario doesn’t work like in the movies. There’s no one to yell “Cut!” when a scene goes wrong and life doesn’t give you do-overs.

The fact is, for most of rural people, one of the biggest things they’re going to face in the event of SHTF is this: a need to join forces with others who are in the same boat and who share similar beliefs.

We need a circle of well-prepared friends more than we need five guns and a ton of ammo. We need to make connections with trust-worthy people for when the world crumbles. And, we need to do this because there is a preparedness truth that some of us chose to ignore: no matter how well prepared we think we are, we will always lack something. It may be something obvious or it may be something obscure, it may be something we had that got lost or damaged, or used up. Don’t fool yourself, we will lack something no matter how good we think we have it.

You can’t wait for FEMA or the National Guard when a disaster strikes and you can’t count on luck when the world becomes a dark place. Luck won’t prevent the grocery store to run out of food and luck won’t keep you safe for the end of the world.

You need to start preparing to count on each other. You need to get together with neighbors and friends and enhance each other’s preparedness. And it’s not something you have to do out of altruism, but out of pure practicality. In the end the goal is the same: we’ll all be better off when SHTF.

“What can I do to connect with my friends and neighbors when it comes to preparedness matters?”, you may ask.

Well, you shouldn’t go running and tell just anybody what do you stock, where do you keep it and what guns and ammo you have stockpiled, and then ask them” Now show me yours”.

You can start with small steps and if some real disaster has recently struck your area, the aftermath gives a perfect opportunity to go to your neighbors and do a mutual check. Find out what they run out of, where they screwed up and what they can do differently next time. You can get this info just by discussing with your neighbors without appearing to organize any sort of preparedness league. You can even make agreements with them: for example you could store some extra gasoline for them if they help you with medical emergencies or anything else that you might need during a disaster.

People are always worried about something because self-preservation is part of our nature. You have an opening to discuss about preparedness and you need to approach the people from your community. Don’t tell them you are preparing for the end of the world as they might think you are crazy. Bring up for debate topics related to disasters/threats that are happening or are most likely to happen.

You can start practicing mutual preparedness:

Instead of selling your farm produce to your neighbors, start seeing what those neighbors might have to barter for them. Barter will be more useful than money in a serious disaster. It gives you a chance to know the people you are bartering with.

Get involved in a food co-op because you can always establish a cooperative network based on the main element: food. They may be open to the idea of organically grown crops, hormone-free meats or bulk food purchases on a budget.

If somebody in your circle of preppers has a pick-up truck and others don’t, the truck owner can offer to transport goods for a small fee or for barter. The same goes with any other type of machines that can be used by the community.

You can find some neighbors and sign up for and commute to skill-building classes together. It doesn’t matter if you learn about first aid, home canning or defensive shotgun use as long as you do it with somebody else. It will help you stay committed and motivated to the activity but also to the people.

Start offering to do things for your neighbors and ask them to do things for you. Do this even if you can actually take care of everything yourself. It’s a good way of bonding and getting to know each other’s skills. It provides a good opportunity to learn whom you can trust and whether you yourself are trustworthy.

If somebody close to you, especially relatives, feels unable to prepare for a disaster, see how you can change that by helpfulness and gentle persuasion. When you talk with certain people about preparedness, they feel overwhelmed, too unskilled or too poor to handle it all. Everybody is vulnerable to something and being prepared doesn’t mean you have to become an expert prepper. You have to make sure you increase your odds of survival and you have a fighting chance. Having a bug-out bag will make a huge difference. Knowing how to fortify your home will keep your family safe. Everyone can start with small steps if the mindset is there.

Garage sales are good occasions to know your neighbors and to stock up on preparedness supplies. You will be able to discuss with people from your community and know more about their prepping plans. If someone sells a camp stove because he never used it and thinks he never will, then that person might not be into prepping. But if someone sells a similar item because he got a better model, you might have some common topics to discuss. It’s all about knowing your neighbors and you can tell a lot about a person based on the stuff he owns.

With those you must trust, talk openly about others in your community who might become a problem in harsh times. Those who are clueless about fending for themselves will get desperate and might become real troublemakers. Thieves or chronic freeloaders will bring down the community. Everyone deserves a chance, but I’m willing to consider it for people who ask for one in the first place and are willing to work for it, rather than for those who “make a mistake” and ask for forgiveness and a second chance. When SHTF, there will be no luxury such as second chances and you must act first in order to survive the fall.

Safety in numbers will save you and the community. Your home could be on a map outlining evacuation routes for your area, the government could make your propriety an assembly area just for the fact that it is situated above the flooding zone. Regardless the scenario, there could be many who will come your way and most of “them” won’t have peaceful intentions. What then? You can’t keep up your fort for long if you are all alone. Joining a militia or having a group of trustworthy friends will help you deal with the masses. If some will try their luck with a just one person, nobody will be foolish enough to go against a number of well-armed individuals.

Another aspect that we need to consider during a crisis is what to do with friends and family that come rushing in, knowing you’ve been prepping for anything and your home is a safe haven. I know a few people that said “if the end of the world comes we’ll just move in with you”. Although it sounds like a joke, I’m pretty sure it isn’t. There will always be someone who knocks at your door during a time of need and you just can’t turn your back on them. They are the “friendly freeloaders” and although you are well intended, odds are you won’t be able to take care of them forever. This is why they need to be integrated in your local community and here is where it gets tricky.

If you are a lone wolf you won’t be supported by your community. Even worse, you will be seen as a threat if you bring in outsiders when things turn bad. However, if you have a good reputation amongst your peers, if you have the same interests. If they know how the skills of someone can help the entire community, it will be much easier to integrate others and give them a job insides the community. It is important to show how the new arrivals can help everyone and it can be done much easier if there is room for debate.

A last word

No man is an island and we should make sure we have someone to spend our time with, when the world around us dies. The government will tell you to wait for their help, to be passive and rely on experts and outsiders. They will ask you to behave like dependent children and wait for big daddy when in reality, you have people you can trust around you. People, who can help us out or, if need be, take us in.

Would you rather wait alone or turn to others, your friends and neighbors, when the world ends?

What You Need To Know

On Tuesday AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of reports of an active shooter in the Lower West Side of Manhattan. As details began to emerge soon thereafter, it turns out the shots were fired by police after a truck was driven down a pedestrian walkway and bike path, intentionally running over pedestrians and bikers before slamming into the side of a school bus. The driver, 26 year old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, exited the vehicle brandishing imitation firearms and was shot in the abdomen by an NYPD officer.

Eight people were killed and at least nine injured in the attack.

According to DHS, Saipov is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Uzbekistan who entered the country in 2010 on a diversity visa. New York authorities report Saipov frequented/liked/commented on social media accounts containing material related to the Islamic State.

Following the suspects arrest and initial treatment at Bellevue Hospital, Saipov was interviewed by law enforcement and revealed the following:

1. He was inspired to carry out this particular type of attack by Islamic State videos.

2. He intended to use the truck to strike pedestrians along the West Side Highway, then proceed to the Brooklyn Bridge to continue the attack.

3. He wanted to display Islamic State flags on the truck but decided against it as it would draw undue attention.

4. During the police interview he requested to displays the Islamic State flag in his room and stated he felt good about what he had done.

5. He began planning the attack approximately one year ago.

6. Specifically chose to strike on Halloween because he believed there would be more civilians on the street for the holiday,

These and other statements can be read within the official federal complaint available HERE (PDF).

During the investigation, handwritten material was recovered near the suspects truck expressing affinity for the Islamic State and and the fact that the group would endure forever.

According to the FBI, one of Saipov’s cellphones contained 90 videos and approximately 4000 still images, most of which was ISIS-related propaganda, torture shots, etc..

Readers are reminded that on November 11th of 2016, AlertsUSA warned subscribers of the release of a new issue of the Islamic State’s Internet magazine known as ‘Rumiyah’ (Rome) calling on Muslims to carry out more vehicular attacks similar to that which occurred in Nice, France on 7/16.

Readers are also reminded that on August 23rd of this year, AlertsUSA warned subscribers of the release of an image on Islamic State social media channels showing a hand holding an iPhone showing the ISIS flag w/ the NYC skyline in background, along with a warning that ISIS supporters are in the U.S..

AlertsUSA again warns readers that the Islamic State continues to call on supporters in the West to carry out more vehicular-style attacks and has previously highlighted Thanksgiving Day parades as an ideal target. If public events of this type are in your upcoming holiday plans, it behooves you to be security minded, to not position yourself in vulnerable locations and to maintain a high level of vigilance and awareness.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the overall domestic and international threat environment, and will immediately notify service subscribers via SMS messages of new alerts, warnings and advisories or any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.

How To Plan Your Survival Group

Are you a lone wolf or do you believe there are still capable people around you? Starting a survival group makes sense in today’s political situation and social climate. You could make it on your own, but survival is much easier within a group of people. Here is what you can do to for your own survival group and make it work.

As those wanting to be prepared (preppers), we must understand that we are not special and we cannot do everything to keep things in order. Is just not possible and you can’t be a hunter and a medic at the same time. There are tasks which require the help of your fellow neighbors and projects are done much faster when you have the numbers. Not to mention that surviving alone is not ideal and it takes a toll on your mindset over time. We are social creatures, and we evolved by sticking together and helping each other.

Seeking out like-minded people should be the first step in establishing a survival group. The number of preppers is increasing year after year, and we are no longer being seen as the “odd” members of society. While certain TV shows are twisting the reality of prepping, the increasing natural disaster in the U.S. made people realize that preparing for an emergency is just, and should be common sense.

The essential steps to planning a survival group

Self-assess

Before you ask what others can do for the survival group, you should ask yourself what you can do for it. You should become a valuable member and show others what you can bring to the table. Maybe you are trained in self-defense, maybe you have medical training, or maybe you are bushcraft master. All your skills should be brought forward, and you should never sell yourself short. It may look like you’re showing off at first, but it’s not a popularity contest.

You should also consider your psychical condition. Some people can spend a lot of times outside, exploring the great outdoors, while others require medication to get through the day. Even if some members have certain limitations, that doesn’t mean they are less worthy to be part of your survival group.

Be honest with yourself and don’t assume you can do more than you are capable. The point here is to become an efficient member of the survival group and be fair to others while acknowledging your own limitations.

Start building and expand

When people think about forming a survival group, they start with close friends and neighbors. Before you reach out to them, you should look closer to home. Your family is your immediate survival group, and you need to take them into account. Your kids and elderly parents have capabilities that can be put to good use. They can offer assistance with your prepping plans, and they can learn or teach you skills which you lack.

When the group evolves, each individual’s qualities should be assessed, and roles need to be assigned accordingly. An elderly person may not be able to do more than cook or see after the kids, but it still makes a huge difference.

Seek others in your proximity to expand the group. The group could be a few houses around your block or even a subdivision of a suburban neighborhood. Keep everything inside your survival group since once it is formed, it will not be open to outsiders.

Make sure to pick a leader

An effective survival group is an organized one. You can’t have order without an overall leader with a second in command. Most survival groups will choose people with clear leadership ability, perhaps military or law enforcement. However, the other roles in the group can be filled by anyone. Even more, they should teach their job to others so that the group can still function in case some member is lost.

Check if you have all the needed skillsets

You should identify all the skillsets available in your survival group since not everything you may need is in your geographical area. Chances are you may need to extend your area of action, in case your team needs a profession that is hard to find. You may need a doctor, a mechanic or a farmer/gardener and there’s no guarantee you will find one in your neighborhood. In an efficient group, you will find people who can do more than one job. The more skills you have in the group, the better.

Do a field test

There’s no point to having a good array of skills if you don’t practice and evolve them. Plan a weekend outing with your survival group and test their skills. A camping trip or gathering at someone’s house outside of town is an ideal scenario.

You can even do it in your neighborhood and gather at a member’s house. Turn off the utilities and see how everyone is coping with privation. You can even establish a perimeter around the house and post guard during the gathering. It will help you practice your skills in a less stressful environment before the brown stuff hits the fan.

Stockpile resources

Since you cannot predict the future and precisely establish how long a disruption may last, the goal will be to plan up to one year’s duration. Your survival group will need all the basics to survive during that time. Water, food, clothing, tools, medicine, communication gear, weapons, and ammunition are all a must for each member of the group.

You can help each other by sharing tips and information about your prepping plans. If there’s an ammo sale or if a nearby farm has a surplus of produce, you could save money, and everyone from your survival group will be prepared.

The good thing about having access to a variety of resources is that you can trade for the things you need or those you want. Bartering inside your group is much safer than having to deal with outsiders. A smart prepper will always accumulate extra supplies for use in barter.

Establish a territory

Depending on how the survival group is formed, and the skillset it has, you may need to establish a bug-in territory. This may be your own house or a city block, whatever works and can be protected without putting everyone in danger. You also need to plan a bug-out scenario, since you may be forced to relocate to a place in the country if a natural disaster destroys your neighborhood. This will require transportation vehicles for both people and resources and a well-established transportation plan. Not everyone from the group will agree to leave everything behind when the time comes.

If you establish a bug-in location, you should patrol the area around your territory. You will need to maintain awareness of local activities and keep everyone informed in case something happens. Depending on your region, you can either display a weapon openly or keep a low profile. Once it hits the fan, everyone approaching your territory must be stopped before entering your perimeter. All the talking and interrogation should be done outside that perimeter. They may be scouting the location, or they may carry infectious diseases. You also need to keep an open mind since some of the people approaching you may just need to barter, or they seek aid. You need to establish a protocol on how to handle outsiders and stick to it.

Everyone should be ready at any time

They should acquire basic proficiency with firearms, and they should have their resources organized. Training together will help everyone from your group since you learn much faster by doing rather than reading or talking about it. If the order is given to evacuate, you can’t waste time because some members can’t find their bug out bags or they misplaced certain resources. Your escape and evasion load should always be ready, and everyone should follow an established bug out timeline.

Ideally, everyone should have similar items in their bags so that each group member can go to any pack for support in an emergency. This is especially useful when it comes to firearms and ammunition since you can’t share ammo which is useless for your caliber.

Organization and fluidity are the main characteristics of an efficient survival group. You can’t use an electric vehicle as a common resource if you don’t have a method of charging it. You shouldn’t pack food that needs cooking if your bug out plan doesn’t include a resting or camping spot. These are all things that can be discussed and members need to communicate to identify flaws which can jeopardize the integrity of your survival group. There’s no shame in asking for advice and people should trust each other.

A last word

As I said before, immediate survival groups are forming inside families, and it seems this trend is growing. People are starting to show interest more and more to prepping and they are discussing with their neighbors about how to prepare better. I believe this year is a wake-up call for many out there and we can no longer ignore the natural disasters happening in our backyard. Forming a survival group will help you survive and learn how to prepare for a short or long-term disaster.
