How To Store 1 Year Worth Of Food

A primary concern of most preppers, food storage seems easy. But have you tried living for a year on the stuff that you stored in your pantry? Survival food storage is actually somewhat of a science because you need to store the right amount of calories and have sources of protein, carbs, fiber and fat. Having a year worth of food is like an insurance policy and I don’t know about you, but it makes me sleep really, really well.

You need to calculate your calorie needs. You will need to do the calculations for each family member and take into account their preferences, as well as any allergies that they may have.

When figuring out how many weeks or months worth of food you have stored, you need to make sure you include “calories per person” in you calculations. Different members of your family have different calorie needs. Although the traditional recommendation from the FDA is the 2000 calorie diet, it is likely that it does not fit the needs of any of your family members precisely. Younger children will need fewer calories and people who do physical work will need more. Overweight people can handle a reduced calorie intake to lose weight and a slightly higher one to maintain their health weight.

You don’t have to have the full amount of calories you need every day.  People can survive weeks without food. However, you do need to know your limits and your family members’ limits. Going without sufficient food for too long will cause dizziness, headaches, stomach aches and, ultimately, malnutrition. A starved organism eventually begins to break apart the fat tissue to fuel itself. When all of that is gone, it will move on to the rest of the tissue types. A starved human body has to be slowly returned to the normal amount of food. Try to not dip below 1200 calories per family member to avoid crashing and debilitating effects of malnutrition.

To figure out how many calories your family needs daily (and subsequently to figure out how much food to store), you can use 2 methods. You can either estimate the calories at, say, 1500 calories across the board per family member and multiply that by the number of family members or you can calculate the needed calories scientifically by using what is called the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation. The equation calculates the basal metabolic rate, which means that it is assumed that the person stays at rest the entire day. Keep in mind that these rates are just the basis and add calories for each family member based on the amount of energy they exert. The equations for men and women are below. Keep in mind that you need to express weight in kilograms, height in centimeters an age in years to arrive at the correct answer.

For men: (9.99 x weight) + (6.25 x height) – (4.92 x age) + 5

For women: (9.99 x weight) + (6.25 x height) – (4.92 x age) – 161

To convert inches to centimeters, go here: http://www.convertunits.com/from/inches/to/cm

To convert pounds to kilograms, go here: http://www.convertunits.com/from/pounds/to/kg

When figuring out how much food to stock, keep in mind that when it comes to nutrition, it is not just the number of calories that counts, but where the calories are coming from. For example, you don’t want to stock only noodles and oil, despite the fact that they come with a high number of calories. Good nutrition involves a balance of protein, and complex carbs, with a little bit of simple carbs (or simple sugars). You also want to make sure that you provide your family with a diet that offers at least the minimal necessary amount of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Try using both estimation and calculation to figure out how many calories your family needs daily. How many calories worth of provisions will you need in your first year?

Based on my experience, you will spend about $1000 per person for a year’s worth of food for approximately 1900 calories per day. It may be higher or lower depending on how many calories you want to provide and what sources you choose to use to provide them.

Below is the list of top items to store. They have high caloric and nutritional value.

  1. Long grain white rice provides 1500 calories per pound and has better caloric value than brown rice.
  2. Enriched pasta noodles provides approximately 1700 calories per pound, although this number fluctuates depending on the brand.
  3. Dry beans provide about 1300 calories per pound and are rich in protein and fiber. Buy a variety of dry beans: pinto, black, kidney, lima, northern.
  4. Cornmeal contains approximately 1600 calories per pound and is great for all sorts of good stuff, especially breakfast.
  5. White flour has near 1500 calories per pound and is also very versatile.
  6. Oatmeal provides 1700 calories per pound.

These are your basic “filling”, “carby” foods. By all means, feel free to add brown rice, dry potatoes and other dry cereal types to the mix. Keep in mind that whole wheat flower does not store for very long.

Next are the other necessities, like sugar, salt, yeast and oil, as well as meats and canned, dehydrated or freeze dried produce.
Sugar and salt are important preservatives and I recommend you store 50 pounds of sugar per person (that’s more than you need for a year by the way) and always have 20 pounds of salt on hand (you can buy rock salt in bulk and grind you own. It is great for preserving meat, and will be useful in an extended disaster scenario.

The easiest way to store 1 year worth of food without breaking the bank:

  1. Obtain storage supplies: Mylar bags or Mylar wrap, 5 gallon buckets, other jars and containers.
  2. Buy a few bulk bags of rice and beans.
  3. Buy rock salt and sugar.
  4. Watch the sales and obtain other survival foods when they are sold at significant discounts. For example, grocery stores will frequently sell baking supplies at deep discounts around the holidays; spices and marshmallows are cheaper during the grilling season, etc. Each time you shop, try to buy 1 week worth of certain food group for survival needs.

Use the caloric values I provided to figure out how much rice, beans and noodles your family needs to cover its caloric needs for 1 year and begin obtaining these products.

Massive solar storm that will slam Earth TOMORROW could knock out power supplies, damage satellites and trigger stunning auroras

  • Nasa spotted a solar flare releasing a coronal mass ejection earlier this week
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a ‘G1’ storm watch
  • It coincides with the formation of ‘equinox cracks’ in the sun, which form around the equinoxes on March 20 and September 23 and weaken the magnetic field
  • A huge solar storm is heading for Earth, and it’s likely to hit tomorrow. The storm could knockout satellites, disrupt power supplies and spark stunning displays of the Northern Lights. It was created last week by an enormous explosion in the sun’s atmosphere known as a solar flare, and charged particles from that flare are now on their way to our planet.

The arrival of the solar storm coincides with the formation of ‘equinox cracks’ in Earth’s magnetic field, which some scientists believe form around the equinoxes on March 20 and September 23 each year.

These cracks weaken our planet’s natural protection against charged particles and could leave commercial flights and GPS systems exposed to the incoming storm.

The cracks also mean stargazers are more likely to catch glimpses of the Northern lights this week.

This may include parts of Scotland and northern England, as well as the ‘northern tier’ of the US including parts of Michigan and Maine.

A huge solar storm is heading for Earth, and it’s likely to hit tomorrow. It may trigger the Northern Lights in parts of Scotland and northern England. This animation shows the aurora forecast for Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 March (time in GMT is shown top right).

The charged, magnetic particles from the solar storm can interfere with machinery in Earth’s orbit as well as at the planet’s surface, such as GPS systems and radio signals.

They can also threaten airlines by disturbing Earth’s magnetic field.

Very large flares can even create currents within electricity grids and knock out energy supplies.

‘A minor geomagnetic storm watch is now in effect for the 14 and 15 March, 2018. Aurora may be visible at high latitudes,’ the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wrote in a statement.

The particles, which came from the sun after solar flares took place on March 6 and 7, could cause ‘weak power grid fluctuations’ and a ‘minor impact on satellite operations,’ according to the NOAA.

Nasa said the first of the two flares – classified in the potent X class and facing directly at the Earth – was the biggest this year.

It was one of the largest of this cycle known as the solar minimum, which began in early 2007.

Geomagnetic storms are ranked on a severity scale, with G at the bottom, R in the middle and S at the top.

WHAT ARE SOLAR STORMS AND ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

Solar storms, or solar activity, can be divided into four main components that can have impacts on Earth:

    • Solar flares: A large explosion in the sun’s atmosphere. These flares are made of photons that travel out directly from the flare site. Solar flares impact Earth only when they occur on the side of the sun facing Earth.
    • Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s): Large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that erupt from the sun. These clouds can erupt in any direction, and then continue on in that direction, plowing through solar wind. These clouds only cause impacts to Earth when they’re aimed at Earth.
    • High-speed solar wind streams: These come from coronal holes on the sun, which form anywhere on the sun and usually only when they are closer to the solar equator do the winds impact Earth.
    • Solar energetic particles: High-energy charged particles thought to be released primarily by shocks formed at the front of coronal mass ejections and solar flares. When a CME cloud plows through solar wind, solar energetic particles can be produced and because they are charged, they follow the magnetic field lines between the Sun and Earth. Only charged particles that follow magnetic field lines that intersect Earth will have an impact.

While these may seem dangerous, astronauts are not in immediate danger of these phenomena because of the relatively low orbit of manned missions.

However, they do have to be concerned about cumulative exposure during space walks.

This photo shows the sun's coronal holes in an x-ray image. The outer solar atmosphere, the corona, is structured by strong magnetic fields, which when closed can cause the atmosphere to suddenly and violently release bubbles of gas and magnetic fields called coronal mass ejections

The damage caused by solar storms

Solar flares can damage satellites and have an enormous financial cost.

The charged particles can also threaten airlines by disturbing Earth’s magnetic field.

Very large flares can even create currents within electricity grids and knock out energy supplies.

When Coronal Mass Ejections strike Earth they cause geomagnetic storms and enhanced aurora.

They can disrupt radio waves, GPS coordinates and overload electrical systems.

A large influx of energy could flow into high voltage power grids and permanently damage transformers.

This could shut off businesses and homes around the world.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that the forecast suggests the solar storm will be a G-1 or ‘minor’ storm.

This could become a G-2 ‘moderate storm’ depending on how the charged particles hit Earth.

The event coincides with the formation of ‘equinox cracks’ – theorised by some scientists to form semi-annually during the equinox.

On March 20 and September 23 each year, the Earth and sun line up so that day and night are of roughly equal length.

But the equinoxes also cause cracks to open up in Earth’s magnetic field which stay open for hours.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that the forecast suggests the solar storm will be a G-1 or 'minor' storm. Pictured is the aurora forecast at 9:00pm GMT (5:00pm ET) tomorrow

Nasa and the NOAA keep track of solar events using an array of telescopes and probes which help generate geomagnetic weather forecasts.

Researchers also study the sun to learn more about its structure as well as obtain data to make predictions about different types of solar flares.

These include solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections, which are large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that erupt from the sun.

Solar flares and particles ejected via coronal mass ejections are associated with dark spots on the sun’s surface.

    image

These are areas of intense magnetic activity, and when the magnetic fields in a sunspot cross each other, it can result in an energy explosion, known as a solar flare, which sends radiation into space.

Solar flares only impact Earth when they occur on the side of the sun facing the Earth.

Sometimes, these explosions can send out coronal mass ejections –  large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that erupt from the sun.

The event coincides with the formation of 'equinox cracks' in the sun, which form around the equinoxes on March 20 and September 23. On these dates the Earth and sun line up so that day and night are of equal length. Pictured is an equinox crack that formed in March 2012

Forecasters monitor these events, and when a storm looks likely to have a significant impact, engineers can shut down certain systems on satellites, or prepare for impacts on the power grid.

The sun has an 11-year cycle of sunspot activity, with the last maximum having taken place in April 2014.

This summer, Nasa is set to launch a spacecraft called Parker Solar Probe, which will travel closer to the sun than any other previous mission.

It will fly by Venus and travel into the corona – the sun’s upper atmosphere, with the aim of learning more about the particles that are ejected by the sun.

President Warns of Nuclear Threat from N. Korea

February 3, 2018

On Jan 30th the following related Flash SMS message
was sent to
AlertsUSA subscriber mobile devices:

1/30 – President Trump in State of the Union Address: N. Korea’s reckless pursuit of nuclear missiles could very soon threaten the U.S. homeland.

What You Need To Know

On eight occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding safety and security matters. Most important for this report, on Tuesday, AlertsUSA subscribers were informed of a warning issued by President Trump during his State of the Union address within which he branded North Korea’s leadership as “depraved” and stated that Pyongyang’s pursuit of nuclear missiles could “very soon threaten our homeland.” The President vowed a continued campaign to prevent that from happening.

While most mainstream news coverage of N. Korea over the last few weeks has revolved around the hermit kingdom sending a limited number of athletes (along with hundreds of cheerleaders) to the upcoming Winter Olympics in S. Korea, behind the scenes, tensions are increasing as their nuclear and missile programs continue to advance.

According to the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) published late this week by the Department of Defense:

“North Korea has accelerated its provocative pursuit of nuclear weapons and missile capabilities, and expressed explicit threats to use nuclear weapons against the United States and its allies in the region. North Korean officials insist that they will not give up nuclear weapons. Given North Korea’s current and emerging nuclear capabilities; existing chemical, biological, and conventional capabilities; and extremely provocative rhetoric and actions, it has come to pose an urgent and unpredictable threat to the United States, allies, and partners. Consequently, the United States reaffirms that North Korea’s illicit nuclear program must be completely, verifiably, and irreversibly eliminated, resulting in a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons.

Note the head-on conflict between the two emboldened statements above. As consecutive N. Korean regimes have literally destroyed their country (and caused significant pain and hardship for their citizens) in the pursuit of a strategic weapons capability, it is inconceivable that they would, under any circumstances, voluntarily give up these weapons now that the baseline goal has been achieved. Similarly, S. Korea, the U.S., Japan and other nations repeatedly threatened by N. Korea are equally unlikely to tolerate a nuclear-armed N. Korea for much longer. The risk is perceived as much too great.

The NPR document goes on::

“Our deterrence strategy for North Korea makes clear that any North Korean nuclear attack against the United States or its allies and partners is unacceptable and will result in the end of that regime. There is no scenario in which the Kim (Jong-un) regime could employ nuclear weapons and survive.”

Proliferation Threat

Of equal importance is the threat of the proliferation of these weapons. The fact stands that N. Korea is financially in ruins and their situation is growing increasingly dire by the day. Their major benefactors are gone, numerous rounds of United Nations sanctions have reduced incoming revenue streams to a trickle, and the country is desperate for cold hard cash.

In this regard, the NPR also highlights the risk of North Korea selling its nuclear weapons and technology to other state and non-state actors, in turn increasing the pressure on still other nations to build their own nuclear arsenal in order to defend themselves from a nuclear attack.

One glaring example would be Iran, a very close ally of N. Korea. If Tehran were to acquire nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia (a historic enemy of Iran) would acquire their own, as would most other Gulf nations.

North Korea already has a troubling history of selling advanced military technology, including that used in nuclear weapons, to Asian and Middle Eastern countries. In the 1990s, North Korean scientists taught Pakistan how to make Krytrons (cold-cathode gas-filled tubes used in nuclear triggers), as well as provided them with low-enriched uranium hexafluoride (UF6) which was then transferred to Libya. It is widely believed that North Korea provided Iran with nuclear technology. Pyongyang also helped Syria build a nuclear reactor (which was destroyed by Israel in 2007).

Then there are the numerous terrorist organizations seeking access to the ultimate weapon of war, which could generate both a significant cash haul for North Korea, as well as help them strike the U.S., albeit indirectly.

In 1998, al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden declared in a religious edict that acquiring and using weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) was his “Islamic duty.” In 2008, current al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, released a book titled Exoneration within which he uses key Quranic themes (as opposed to an outright religious edict) to justify the use of such weapons.

While N. Korea’s participation in the Olympics is a nice step in engagement, keep this situation in perspective as it has little bearing on a peaceful resolution to the overall crisis.

Nuclear Posture Review cover - ALLOW IMAGES

The 2018 Department of Defense Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) is a sweeping analysis and reassessment of the U.S. nuclear weapons policy and doctrine. Thematically, the 2018 NPR shows a dramatic shift from that outlined in the 2010 version, including the loosening of the constraints on the use of nuclear weapons to cover significant non-nuclear strategic attacks. This includes, but is not limited to, attacks on the U.S., allied, or partner civilian populations or infrastructure, and attacks on U.S. or allied nuclear forces, their command and control, or warning and attack assessment capabilities.

Security Tight for Super Bowl LII

February 3, 2018

What You Need To Know

The quarterback calling the plays for Super Bowl LII at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN is the U.S. government, and in particular, the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation. In addition, National Guard troops and law enforcement partners from across the country are patrolling festivities in the Twin Cities area until February 5th. Not so visible are the FBI hostage-rescue team, Tier 1 military counterterrorism assets, detection teams for nuclear, chemical, and biological hazards, as well as response and mitigation teams for those weapons of mass destruction.

Despite these assets, a cloud of concern covers the event, and most importantly, outside of the main security perimeter, given that Minneapolis-St. Paul, or “Little Mogadishu” as the locals call it, is home to the third highest number of terror prosecutions in the U.S. since 9/11.

Consider the following:

  • 12 area residents have been charged with providing support to the Islamic State.
  • 20 area residents have been arrested for alleged support of the Somali terror group al Shabab which pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2012.
  • Between 2011 – 2014, 13 area residents died fighting for the groups.
  • In September of 2016, Somali refugee Dahir Adan walked into a Minneapolis shopping mall and started stabbing shoppers — after asking if they were Muslim — and shouting “Allahu Akbar!”
  • In May of 2017, two local men were arrested after police searched their car and discovered a hand grenade, handgun, several assault rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, and devices capable of igniting bombs.

These are just a few of the ties between the Twin Cities area and Islamic terrorism.

Readers are reminded that as AlertsUSA has warned, almost weekly, over the past two years, the Islamic State and al Qaeda have repeatedly called for followers to carry out attacks in the U.S. and other Western nations using any means available.
