What You Need To Know

On 19 occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding security matters. Most pressing for this issue, last Saturday evening subscribers were informed of reports of a vehicular attack and gunfire on the London Bridge and Borough Market area of central London. In this incident, a rented utility van was used to intentionally plough into pedestrians on the famed bridge. Once the van crashed to a stop, three men jumped out, ran down the street and began attacking random revelers with knives and other edged weapons in pubs and restaurants in the Borough Market area. Within minutes all three were shot dead by police.

Multiple witnesses report that the three assailants were screaming “This is for Allah” during the attack and all three were wearing belts with canisters attached, having the appearance of suicide vests. London Metropolitan police report the bombs were fake, though homemade petrol bombs were found inside of the utility van. In total, seven people were killed and 48 injured in the attack.

London Metropolitan Police report the leader of the trio, Khuram Butt, age 27, of east London, was a Pakistani refugee and well known to law enforcement and intelligence agencies for his radical ideology. His two cohorts were of Moroccan descent, one of whom was arrested in Italy approximately one year ago on his way to Syria, but still managed to gain entry into Britain.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the incident via their Aamaq news agency, stating that “A detachment of fighters from the Islamic State carried out the London attacks.”

Notre-Dam Attack

On Tuesday AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of reports of shots fired near the Notre-Dam cathedral in Paris. In this incident, a 40 year old Algerian doctorate student named Farid Ikken walked up to a police officer, pulled out a hammer and struck the officer in the head while yelling “This is for Syria” in French. He was immediately shot in the chest by a second police officer. French media outlets report that after being shot, the assailant told police he was “a soldier of the caliphate.” A search of his backpack revealed multiple long kitchen knives.

New Threats

On multiple occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified of a range of new threats issued by the Islamic State via various social media outlets. Targets of these threats include Australia, the UK, and France (see related graphics here and here). Of particular note, on Wednesday, the Islamic State broadcast a warning to all Muslims in America, Russia, France, Britain, Canada, Belgium, Italy, Australia and elsewhere outside of the Caliphate to stay clear of Crusader gathering places as they are targeted for attacks.

Also this week, new Islamic State propaganda widely circulating through social media outlets clearly encourages the targeting of police.

As AlertsUSA / Threat Journal warned last week, 2016’s month of daytime fasting and prayer was the bloodiest in recent history. Attacks included a massive suicide bombing in Baghdad that killed nearly 300 people, an Istanbul airport attack that killed 45, and a shooting massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando that killed 49.

Readers are again urged to maintain a high level of vigilance and increased security awareness when out an about, and in particular, when present at large public gatherings and other soft targets.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the overall domestic and international threat environment and will immediately notify service subscribers via SMS messages of new alerts, warnings and advisories or any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.
