What You Need To Know

On 17 occasions this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding security matters. Most pressing for this update, beginning Monday AlertsUSA subscribers were informed of reports of a car explosion on the Champs Elysees in Paris. In this incident, a man carrying guns and explosives died when he rammed a car into a police van on the famed Paris avenue in what officials characterize as a deliberate attack on a convoy of police vehicles. Fortunately for the police and those in the vicinity, upon collision, the attackers’ car burst into flames. The man died even though police were able to extricate him from the burning car. Police sources indicate the weapons included handguns and an AK47 assault rifle.

Authorities also speculate that the suspect may have intended to target the area around the Eiffel Tower based on CCTV footage of the individual tracking police vehicles at the site.

Brussels Attack

Next up, on Tuesday AlertsUSA subscribers were informed of reports of an explosion at the Central Train Station in Brussels, Belgium. In this incident, a 36-year-old Moroccan national, identified as Oussama Zariouh, entered the station, passed through the ticket hall and approached a group of passengers below the main concourse. There, the suspect grabbed his suitcase, began shouting and his suitcase violently burst into flames, but did not initially explode. As the attacker moved away from the from the burning bag, a smaller explosion did take place, at which point the attacker charged an armed Belgian soldier while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ and was immediately shot dead.

Belgian police state that the bomb, which obviously failed to properly detonate, was packed with nails and the powerful explosive TATP, or Triacetone Triperoxide. Had the device operated correctly, the impact would have been catastrophic.

Readers are reminded that in March of last year, three coordinated suicide bombings occurred in Belgium: two at Brussels Airport in Zaventem, and one at Maalbeek metro station in central Brussels. In those incidents, a total of thirty-two civilians and three perpetrators were killed, and more than 300 people injured.

More Calls for Attacks

Also this week, AlertsUSA subscribers were informed twice of new calls by the Islamic State for followers to carry out even more attacks on western nations and disbelievers, or kufars, in general. Their encouragement includes stressing the use of vehicles to plow into groups as well as the use of guns and knives in these attacks.

Caution Moving Forward

Readers are urged to bear in mind that despite the increasing losses of the Islamic State on battlefields in the Middle East and N. Africa, this does not signal an imminent reduction in the number of terror attacks that will be occurring in western nations. Far from it. It is estimated that tens of thousands of foreign fighters from the west have already traveled to battlefields in the Middle East and N. Africa, received training in bombmaking and other forms of mayhem, and then returned to their home countries waiting for the right motivation, sympathetic reaction, or intentional call to action to launch attacks. Add to this the influx of millions of migrants and refugees (mostly military-aged males) which have already streamed (or have been invited) into the Americas and Europe from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. While clearly not all of these individuals are prone to violence and fanaticism, even single digit percentages of these groups, so motivated, pose a grave risk to safety and security, particularly if devout followers of Islam.

The Quran states unequivocally the triumph of Islam over all religions (see the free report Deadly Verses below). Jihad, terrorism and violence against unbelievers are absolute foundational concepts of Islam and hallmarks of the life and words of Mohammad.

At present, European nations clearly face the greater threat due to simple geography, growing divisions among its member states, the comparative ease of migrant / refugee entry, and significant challenges faced in assimilation. Nonetheless, the threat of additional attacks in N. North America is still very significant, as evidenced by near weekly arrests and convictions of individuals in some stage of planning and execution of strikes or providing material support to those who would do so.

Continued security awareness and vigilance are urged.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the overall domestic and international threat environment and will immediately notify service subscribers via SMS messages of new alerts, warnings and advisories or any developments which signal a change the overall threat picture for American citizens as events warrant.
